Dahua make some cracking cameras and basic DVD with network but loads on he market just avoid eBay rubbish and get decent PS3 and hdd (proper DVR units) standard of drives don't last
chady
I want the best quality camera possible, I want a HHD to be able to record 24/7 And I would like to be able to view the cameras remotely from my phone. The thing that worries me I want to fit the cameras to the soffit so need to be able to pick a clear image up from a distance and be able to zoom in on the playback if nessacerry The problem is there are to many different cameras and recorders etc. Where is a good place to get this gear from and and recommendations on actual cameras please? Any thoughts on this setup? http://www.digitaldirectsecurity.co.uk/5-mid-range-box-camera-kit-ahd-720p-ahk-2vn.html
Newbie to this
HikVision is good kit but £300 won't get you very far at all. I work in this industry (don't do domestic only commercial) and in my opinion £300 won't even put a dent in it.

HDAV
Dahua hdcvi stuff gets you tidy camera for £60 (trade) 720p with separate ir (1080 maybe but IR won't be as good) but decent dvr is £300+ with drives.......

That's really tricky to achieve... there usually just isn't the data in the image to be able to do that. I do a lot of photography and the approach that always gives the best result is use the right lens for the job. If it were possible to use a wide angle lens and just zoom in later, none of the sports photographers would be using long lenses. I know budget is an issue, but I think you probably need more than one camera (a wide for overview plus a telephoto on say a key access point). FWIW, one of my mates went down the wide angle route to "cover" his front door and drive and whenever there's someone on the drive all you can really tell is that it's a person! He can tell the difference between his wife and daughter vs a stranger but I'm sure that's only because he knows who is already in the house! rovercoupe
I would go down one of two routes, firstly get a pro in and spend alot and get a decent setup without the hassle or the "yorkshire" way is to buy a cheap setup and install yourself. I can reccomend a cheap ahd 4 channel set off the bay which is around £55 for the dvr, two cameras and leads. Its stupid cheap but one has been working for the last year with no issues for me, you do have to put a hard drive in it but its real easy to do and ahd cameras are as cheap as £15 if you look around. Its only 720p but its far better than a sd setup and at night its better than 1080p ip cameras. Most go under the flourion brand. You may need to add extra ir illuminators depending on the light you have around the house but if its close to a decent pir floodlight it makes a world of difference having colour cctv at night. I would mirror whats been said above that a wide cover camera will never give good results zoomed in even if you go down the mega expensive 5mp plus camera. A second camera where someone has to come in is a good idea and better if it can be done covert so they walk right upto it and dont see it then you get a great mugshot! Twistedsanity
I got some.ie geek cameras from.the bay of fleas, full tilt, pan and 5x optical zoom, IR, takes a 128gb memory card, viewable and controllable from.any phone or laptop anywhere, can be set to send me.a snapshot as a text when it senses motion, waterproof, can be used wirelessley via Wi-Fi or hardwired, only neads a mains power connection to work so no need to run hundreds of cables everywhere, check.out the range of the IR when your looking as most of.the others I viewed wouldn't do more.than 50 ft! The all singing one cost me.just over £100 and any computer savvy 10year old could hook it up
Simon1
... need to be able to pick a clear image up from a distance and be able to zoom in on the playback if nessacerry Been watching too many films where they zoom in, or just tell the computer to 'enhance'. It's all b*llsh*t unfortunately. For £300 you don't get sharp images where you can zoom in to get more detail, especially at night.

For £300 you don't get sharp images where you can zoom in to get more detail, especially at night. As above. Even with good gear you will have problems indentyfing who people are. You only have to look at the footage on crime watch. If you put cameras up high all you see is the top of people's heads. Don't forget that you should not film outside of your boundaries without registration through ICO. Google, information commissioners office. For regs because the footage isn't admisable and you could get grief. This has been covered on here before. Do a search.

fortune
I did a search for you and have a read of this lot >>>. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/311248-public-video-surveillance/page-2?hl=cctv The common misconception about CCTV is that there is an allowance for home/private use. Yes you can use it without registration but you can only imagine your own property and your land without running into problems no matter what nonsense the police and the council come out with. They will say that the public are exempt from data protection ect. but only so on videoing on your own property. As soon as you view even a small bit outside your boundaries you are not exempt from the data protection act and all of the responsibility of the laws. It is all in the ICO site information >>> I think that this is a relevant bit >>> https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/cctv/ And this the relevant paragraph >>> What if my camera captures footage of individuals beyond the boundaries of my property? You must consider whether it is necessary for your camera to operate beyond the boundary of your property. If your camera covers, even partially, any areas beyond the boundaries of your property, such as neighbouring gardens or the street, then it will no longer be exempt from the Data Protection Act (DPA) under the domestic purposes exemption. This does not mean that you are breaching the DPA but it does mean that you might need to take some steps to comply with it. chady
Thanks for all your help, it is very helpful, To be honest I know threre are various laws and confusing. I get on with every one on the couldersac. All I would cover is my house and the drive any way as I only give a monk about my property so it will cover the front of my house and drive as if anything happens off this then it won't effect me. And to be honest I wouldn't want someone recording what I do on my property so I am fully understanding and respectful. I will put some pictures up if I can of the area I want to cover, the only reason I want it to the soffit is so it's descreet I could fit the camera in between the ground floor and first floor window but would be in your face? chady
Sorry not brilliant photos strange angles to miss out company details and contact numbers etc all I want to cove is the front door drive and the black car on the front, that is all
Medic1281
Forgive me but cctv up there will be next to useless. You'll see the tops of people's heads/hats/hoods. You won't be able to identify anyone from it. Is there a lower, but discreet place you could put it instead.
HDAV
Me I would go for bullet cams on the top of the porch. Wide is angle lens as it looks short. Edited February 16, 2017 by HDAV
rovercoupe
I was in cef today and they do a floodlight with a covert camera built in, not cheap but only you would know its a camera and you get a floodlight too! Its going to be difficult to get a good image with a white van and a black car the exposure will have to be set to one or the other or invest in some extra illuminators/ floodlighting.
