Ricko
Hi, I've got a cheap little generator that I picked up for twenty quid. I put fresh fuel in it (Aspen) and it started fine, but it only runs on choke. I completely stripped the carb down and cleaned it and it will still only run on choke. When I turn the choke off it doesn't cut out immediately, it carries on running for a bit before gradually dying. Any ideas? Your thoughts, as ever, are very welcome. Ricko
Vacuum So it is sucking in air, I suppose I could try sealing the carb gaskets with Hylomar or similar?
TIGHTCHOKE
If it is only running on the choke it wants more air, not less.
Remimax
when you cleaned the carb did the jets get a good inspection ?. all the hallmarks of lack fuel/bunged jets. has the tank got a built in filter on the on/off tap usually get blocked easyly on cheap genys. is fuel level in the float bowl correct. cant be much happy hunting Edited March 13, 2017 by Remimax
Ricko
I cleaned the jets with carb cleaner and blew them out with the air line. I'll check the fuel tap filter, although the genny doesn't seem to have had much use, in fact I'm not sure if the fella said that he'd replaced the tap. How do I check that the fuel level is correct in the float bowl? Cheers
rovercoupe
I have had the same on some honda clone carbs and only after a small drill bit or bit of wire has been put through the jets did it work as it should, also drilled one main jet out to the next size and it ran like a stabbed rat! Cheers you need to push summit thin down the jet to make sure its clear, airline and carb cleaner not always the answer . old dryed fuel turn's to thick tar. most of these cheap geny's have fine rust probs in the tank which ends up blocking the filter on the tap. take yer float top off an operate float by hand with fuel on to confirm good flow and no debris in needle valve. if your float valve is working the level will be correct. coatesy75
if it only runs on choke it's starved of fuel, check all jets etc and its got a good supply
Highlandladdie
So it is sucking in air, I suppose I could try sealing the carb gaskets with Hylomar or similar? Are they not on with a jubilee? Just a wee tweek to seal them up? I'd have said that the use of choke, increasing the vacuum indicates that the carb isn't pulling enough fuel through the jets. Checking the jets, especially if it has sat for a long time. Old petrol goes nice and gooey blocking up jets and making the floats stick in the wrong position. Make sure your jets and all components of the carburetor are pristine. Check fuel supply pipes and I'd also be checking the airfilter, and any breather tubes or lines off of the carb too for cac. Red-dot
Is there a small clear rubber primer globe in the fuel line? These go brittle and allow air locks. Also check plastic feed piping for cracks.
Gordon R
ricko - if you travel anywhere near Bolton and need something to clean the jets, I have a few carb files - all sizes - enough to clean the jets better than carb cleaner. More than welcome to have some.
Velocette
Has anyone mentioned checking the fuel tank breather,,in the filler cap. If this is blocked it will cause most of the symptoms you list.
Lord Geordie
Many moons ago, I had a little set of cleaning rods that were great for cleaning out motorbike carb jets! The jets normally screw out, so of all else fails. Just find out the jet size, and buy a replacement.

KFC
If all of the above checks fail to solve the problem then it could be the exhaust valve leaking, if it's a four-stroke of course.
