20bjames
Hi all I am booking some days at a high bird shoot near to me I shoot a 20 bore and I don't really want to shoot 30 + gram shot through it does anyone have experience of shooting high birds with a 20 and what's your cartridge of choice
dodeer
Hull HPE 28g 4.5 through a tight choke is ideal
wj939
How high in reality are they? What are the equivalent 12b users shooting 30-32-36? Unless they are shooting 36g+ stick with a 28g shell and drop a shot size and up the choke if you can.
fuzzypigeon
RC sipe 28g 5's will bring them down at most ranges with a bit of choke

Stonepark
For a 20b shooting 28g, you should really be looking a 6 and full choke to have pattern and energy to 45 yards. No5 and bigger won't pattern sufficiently beyond 40 yards at 28g and you are looking at patchy patterns which will bring down birds but will not be consistent due to the lack of pellets with a higher ratio of pricked birds. Perazzishot
I have used RC Mini Magnum 32g 4's very successfully on good range pheasants using 1/2 & 3/4 chokes. The RC 28/5 are also a very good load and more than capable to bring down most things out to 50 yards!

I beg to differ! The below has 27g #5 patterned at 30yds with an IC choke https://www.testshot.net/shotgun/pattern/2696 40 yds with #4.5 an IM or Full choke are more than achievable and, most importantly deadly

fuzzypigeon
RC sipe 28g 5's are more than capable for warter......they are not the highest out there
motty
Continental shooter. A couple of points about that pattern. Firstly, that is from a homeload. Second, it is only at around 27.5 yards. Hardly shows any high bird capabilities.
figgy
Some 21g BB shot carts will have all the energy you need not sure about pattern density but I'm sure Hull will make some for next season. 25 or 28 gram of 5 should bring them down with some choke to keep a pattern. Stonepark
I beg to differ! The below has 27g #5 patterned at 30yds with an IC choke https://www.testshot.net/shotgun/pattern/2696 40 yds with #4.5 an IM or Full choke are more than achievable and, most importantly deadly Should pattern about 83% at 25, so is actually patterning at 91%, 9% better than theory. Assuming 40 yards this would equate to 79% at full choke if the pattern holds with tighter chokes so 147 pellets so not too shabby, however at 45 this becomes 126 pellets and at 50 yards 108 pellets. The equivalent for no 6 at 40 yards full choke (in theory for commercial load) is 28g 186, 45yds 156 and 50 yds 130. For pheasant i like to see 150 pellets for a clean kill, hence my comments above Edited April 2, 2017 by Stonepark
EdSolomons
Warter priory isn't bustingly high 28g 6 or 5 will be fine
ChrisPCarter
I've used RC20 Semi Magnum 32g 5 (UK 4.5) in my MK60 with good results. The MK60 isn't a particularly light 20 gauge so it's not too bad shooting them.

I'll see if i can find a better pattern
Salop Matt
Warter priory isn't bustingly high 28g 6 or 5 will be fine Personally I would take this guys advice. I don`t know of any of the others who have commented, but I suspect this guy has had a few shots in a few places beyond the local straw bailer ! Perazzishot
I shot Warter 15/16 season with my 20, 16/17 I took my 12, there is plenty for the 20 bore but on the good stuff the 12 was better!
