Lift the back seat up and check around seat belt mounting.pull the carpet back in the rear (footwell)Have a good poke, also look in the rear floor pan (boot) and the place where the jack sits.

Under the bonnet look for corrosion around the headlights.

Ask lots of questions and don't be afraid to give the areas I mention a good proper prod.If the guy/gal stops you then walk away,Stay away from a modified (unless it's been done right).

As with any car the less you want to pay the more risk you take! At least they aren't full of silly electrics so pretty basic, which for a shooting bus is all you need.Spend £4K plus and you will get a minter you can plod off and get proper undersealed for about £250. I've had two,one was fully modded(properly) and a newer bog standard. To be honest if it's just for shooting and not hardcore green laneing, then a standard will do with AT's fitted.Wish I still had mine, great fun to drive.

Only issue I ever had was with the 1st one (blue) crank sensor, very cheap and easy fix. There is another sensor but I can't remember what it's called.I just changed them both. Its a common fault on the older Jim's.Id just change em rather than wait for the issue to occur.About £60 to do both.

Don't know what I did there duplicated, ahh useless iPhone

I had a 30,000 mile automatic and it was low 20's MPG. It was also £420 a year road tax which i queried to no avail.

Engine ran like a Swiss watch and was a great lamping tool albeit a bit tight for room when getting the rifle out the window.

Don't get involved with a lifted vehicle as that overloads the drivetrain and i read some can pop a prop and transfer box shaft.

Thanks for the replies all. Davyo very comprehensive, seems to cover most aspects, and what attracts me as per your latest post is the positive off road ability of this mini off roader.

I loved mine mate & would of still had it had I not stopped shooting,I had my rimmy cut down to 14" (stood up lovely in the cab)and it was great lamping during harvest. The Howa 243 was ok as it was stuck pi the window all night with a foam pad over the window.Farmer was happy as it never left any mess on the margins.

Why didn't they make it the snr size s a vitara, sales would have been through the roof in the absence of the defender

Would love to see them make the Jimny a bit longer X wider, plus with the 1.5 tdi engine they have in the ones they flog in Europe.

Keep it the same shape though and leave it basic and not complicate it with silly electrics etc.

This is the concept but looks like it will be full of no good gadgets.

So it looks like they are just going to fudge up the full project just like they are about to with the defender!

Winchester Dave,

What have you replaced it with?

:shaun:

A slight contrast to a Jimny, it was replaced

With a Golf. I just figured for the minute I'm shooting less and doing more road miles and the deal we got on this golf was pretty awesome!

However, despite the Golf being more efficient, comfortable, smooth, powerful.... I have lost my adventurous side of driving and feel like 'something' is missing having had my Jimny!

That would be great ... slightly bigger with a Diesel engine.. I think they'd be on to a winner since Defender has gone... someone at Suzuki needs to jump on that!! It could be called the 'Jimny X' or something similar ha!! Edited by WinchesterDave

Saying that,I always managed to cart all my stuff about. To be honest the package is spot as it is really and like the defender is the sole reason it had not been changed. The only thing it could do with though is that 1.5 tdi that they supply to Europe.

If you put a Jimny up on a ramp the underside is strikingly like a Defender that shrunk in the wash.... I loved mine but being automatic it was low 20's on petrol and £400 to tax.

I bought it off a wheelchair user and the tax was free but i soon found out otherwise.

All these little cars end up bigger and oversized.

Could call a larger one the Humphrey little jimmy's bigger brother :lol; seriously good off-road standard but properly modified they are one of the best as Davyo says engine swap is needed.

If they were an inch bigger they would not be Jimmys. If you had a supply nearby and I know room is scarce but a small LPG tank behind the seats would make a big difference to the running costs ...creeping up on 40mpg on tarmac money wise.

I have seem a Jimny with an LPG conversion, but fuel economy isn't the reason (will be a bonus though) is like to see the 1.5tdi engine in the UK.

My two that I had, I just wanted that little (not a lot) extra grunt.A lot of the lads (with the know how) fit either a Pug Tdi engine into theirs or a Vectra 1.6 twin cam (petrol). The latter I've been in and it's quite scary to say the least lol.

What they like on the old mpg?

Never took much notice to be honest as used as a 2nd car.Think it was about 28mpg round the doors @ poss 38/40 on a run @ 60mph.I love them and would defiantly have another if I got back into shooting. All the time I had mine I never considered anything else as the Jimny just ticked every box.
