Bungle The Bear
Has anyone got these ..? I know they don't have a gortex liner - which technically makes them non waterproof !!! I understand this sounds crazy, but how waterproof are they, if applied with the proper Leder Gris ?
Wilksy II
I've had a pair over a year and so far no leaks, I've only gone in up to the ankle a few times but they've held, very comfy boot, and not a lot of money.
chrisp
Treat them to your leather treatment of choice regularly and you wont have a problem Ive got a pair of altbergs and le chameaus ,i prefer the le chameaus but for the price difference i cant complain
WinchesterDave
Got issued a pair with the army reserve - I've had dry feet and also use them shooting. They're superb boots. As has been said just treat them and they'll do the job. The reasoning behind the non goretext lining is - if you go above ankle deep in water... water will obviously get in, but due to the goretex, it'll have no way out. With proper treatment and with the natural waterproofing of the leather, it'll keep the water out and if it goes over the ankle it'll dry quicker. figgy
Leder Gris will keep them waterproof. I prefer a product called Leather Genie it has all sorts of natural oils like jojoba and tea tree along with beeswax. Medic1281
I find the standard altbergs to be a narrow fitting. You can buy the wide fitting if your feet are man sized!
Fuddster
seconded Medic. My first pair were sized, after a fitting at Altberg, at 9 regular-Now that day, I wasn't wearing a pair of the wife's tights but even with lightweight summer socks they were tight. Ended up ordering a pair of size 10 wide as a second pair, to accommodate a pair of winter socks. Fortunately ,the bill came to £0.00 which i paid in full,on the day, in cash. f. psycho
If you have a pair of tight altberg for £20 they will stretch and steam them a half size bigger..I did so I could use thick socks..good service good boots

welshwarrior
If you can a trip to the factory is well worth while I drove up to get 2 pairs custom made for my feet after a badly broke leg ankle and foot. Now they could have sold me what I wanted instead they pointed out my feet where an ideal match to their 13 wide and sold me 2 pairs off the shelf. figgy
Welsh warrior that's the size I have 13 wide. I'd did have a smaller size but had a problem with a lace grip that pulled out, they repaired it but were not happy with the repair and offered me a new pair of boots. Remeasured my feet and steamed to a last that suited my foot shape. Best boots ever worn. Even after years of use they have not stretched any or became loose like a lot of leather shoes. So don't buy thinking they will walk in and stretch to your foot. Edited July 1, 2017 by figgy

I popped an eyelet in Iraq then sent me a free pair of boots to cover me whilst my others where repaired.

Bungle The Bear
Thanks for all the replies folks - It certainly looks like a no brainer to give the Altbergs a go - Cant believe how cheap they are !!
Savhmr
Had a pair for years. Keep them conditioned with Ledergris and never had them leak. They're all day comfortable and make great, rubust shooting boots. They make one size with is a wide fitting and then supply different insoles to suit different feet fitting so if you find them a little narrow, try thinner insoles and vice-versa. malmick
I've got a couple of pairs of Altbergs for general use and shooting in. Wife and daughters have them too. All were measured and fitted up in Richmond at the factory shop and all have been fantastic boots. Look after them and they'll look after you, the boots that is. Actually, same goes for wife, daughters and dog, but I've not bought the dog any boots
