craig1982
Hi guys, I'm looking for your views on purchasing a .22 Spring / Gas ram air rife for rat shooting. I was out last evening and only managed to shoot one rat. The problem is the rats are so close to my shooting position that the scope on my PCP will not focus on the target. I cannot move my shooting position as there is a line of straw bales which would block my line of sight. Most modern air rifles appear to be made to mount a scope. My budget would be £250 max and the rifle must have iron sights. Which air rifle would fit the bill ?

Ultrastu
Er .... they don't have open sights A bsa supersport does though . I'd go with a light weight cheap .177 springer in .177 That has fibre optic sights. Something like the browning x blade . Or a stoeger . You could always .change the scope on your pcp for a 1.5 - 5 x 32 And mount it low as you can .that way you will be able to see and shoot a rat a yard from the muzzle. craig1982
Changing the scope would possibly the best option and the cheapest. Thanks.

washerboy
Hw99 but I would buy a gamo or something as cheap, if its under 20 yards to the target then near enough anything will do Smk B2 would even do the job

243deer
For many years, until age had the inevitable effect on my eyesight, I used a red dot sight on the top of an AA s200 - good for anything 1 yard to 35. The big advantage is that you can keep both eyes open when shooting.
craig1982
I have never used a red dot sight before, are they any good. I have seen them on the bay for about £25, surely there must be some issues with them at that price ?
oldypigeonpopper
i just bought a hatsan 900X in 22 for just under £100/ open sights Edited October 19, 2017 by oldypigeonpopper

oldypigeonpopper
i just bought a hatsan 900X in 22 for just under £100/ open sights when i started rat shooting on the farm many years ago, i used a Co2 rat catcher rifle and small red laser torch, i got 40 shots per capsule, very quite shooting,
pork chop
Buy a cheap red dot sight, with a pcp it would be easy to swap over or buy one of those 45• scope mounts and put it on your scope
bruno22rf
Cheap red dot would fit the bill.
craig1982
Well I pushed the boat out and went and bought a Hw99S. Expensive option to shoot some rats. First impression are. What a good little rifle. Full power, light, pointable, Hope the rats keep coming out to play as the nights draw in.
Ultrastu
Nice . Which cal ?
craig1982
.22 as the rats are only 4 yards away. If I cannot get them with the 99s then the S10 FAC will. If that will not do. The Sako Finnfire .22 rimfire will do. If all else fails The Beretta 303 Semi Auto will certainly. North Yorkshire Rats beware.

Mice!
At 4 yards I would put on a bayonet just in case they charge you, got to love shooting rats in low light nothing about then you suddenly realise there are two sat staring right at you, how long have they been there? craig1982
The ones that touch your wellies are a bit scary. The ones that live in the straw bales that you are resting on are more scary. The muck heap is full of them, they do not hang around long to get a shot on, As the nights get longer the red lamp and the BSA S10 at 30 yards comes into play. Back to the pig sheds, Shooting out of the Land Rover window. Ah winter approaches. Heaven.
