AULD YIN
Thinking of fitting sliding side windows to my defender td5 so thought i had better contact my car insurance to see if my insurance cost would increase ,explained to them my intention of getting the windows fitted and the chap say.s nope cant insure your vehicle if you go ahead with that ,we will not insure any vehicle that has retro fitted windows, asked a reason for this decision but he did not know so asked for a supervisor and after 16 minutes of music the supervisor came on the phone and again explained their policy of not insuring vehicles with retro fitted windows, i explained that the windows are LR parts and are still on the original LR side panels and they would be fitted as a unit to my vehicle but was still a no from him ,so after 41 mins i asked if a manager could phone me back with an explanation of their policy. two hours later he phoned me back but had no idea why this policy was initiated but it could be that cutting the panel would weaken it ,explained again the panels on my vehicle would be swapped for original LR CSW fitted panel and window and it was still a no from him ,so unlike their bloody adverts they never sorted me out. johnnie just to add ,got 4 cars and the house insured by direct line ,until renewal time that is. TIGHTCHOKE
Shocking that they refused to insure you if you went ahead with the work and even more shocking that they can't or will not offer an explanation as to why. I wonder if this is a recent change to their business or has it been there for a while? Edited October 16, 2018 by TIGHTCHOKE
Old Boggy
It used to be quite common to fit windows into vans, but never remembered it affecting the insurance too much, if at all, or at worst getting a refusal to insure. I know that one of the questions asked when getting a quote is whether the car has been adapted in any way so assume that any adaptation would up the premium. It would be interesting to hear what other insurance companies have to say. OB
countryman
They all so run a big advertising on TV for landlords insurance, when I said my tenant was on benifits they would not even give me a quote.

AULD YIN
Quote Had a bit of a problem when i changed the insurance from my last car to the td5,,direct line classed it as a pickup, spent over an hour trying to convince them DVLA classed it as a 4x4 utility light goods vehicle ,according to them DVLA is irrelevant and insured it as a pickup as they have only 3 options for a defender td5 , pickup, van.csw, now thats funny as when you put the reg in the info comes from DVLA obviously direct line never thought about the lego construction of the series or defender before coming to the decision on windows.. johnnie Forgot to add i phoned DVLA and they said they cannot get involved but did say they dont know where direct line get their info from but is definitely not classed as a pickup on their records ,and they have no problem with changes to the vehicle as long as i inform them for their records. 243deer
Recently changed from a Freelander TD4 to an L200 - Compare the market class the L200 as a van So rang my current insurer, LV, no probs whatsoever with LV just an extra £27, £25 of which is their standard change fee anyway, took less than 5 mins on the phone. Only issue I have with LV is that they do not do an any driver policy so will switch in January at renewal time. Maybe try LV and see if they have more of a real world attitude. Walker570
Plenty of companies out there....walk. Never heard anything so stupid. In fact the addition of side window makes the Landie SAFER!!! you can see back to the side at junctions etc., improves visibility.

Rewulf
Operations[edit] The Group owns a number of general insurance brands operating within the United Kingdom, including Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege and Green Flag. Direct Line is a company that specialises in selling insurance and other financial services, sold directly to consumers by telephone and the internet.[13] There may be others that are underwritten by the above mentioned companies. I will add this, because I was told it some years ago by several well informed people, however, I can find no internet source to substantiate it. Churchill ins was once owned and operated by a religious group called the Plymouth Brethren, who have some very strange and strict practices regarding business. Churchill ins was once owned and operated by a religious group called the Plymouth Brethren, who have some very strange and strict practices regarding business. Churchill insurance was started as an internet/ phone only insurance company by Credit Suisse to break free of the broker network who demanded high commission rates and held the industry to ransom because they only promoted the companies that paid them the most .commission. The name Churchill was plucked out of thin air after intensive market research found that to be the name that the General Public identified as being the most trustworthy The nodding dog was again the product of huge amounts of market research to identify a trusted figure. As was the logo Churchill was sold by Credit Suisse to RBS who already owned Direct Line and they operated them in tandem until the RBS bailout when they were merged formally as Direct Line and floated as a separate company but still owned by RBS. At this moment in time, I don't believe that Churchill or Direct Line actually underwrite any of their own portfolio. I believe they only act as middle men.
