Thank you. My first efforts were just a blurred red blob with bits. The whole blossom is about 20mm in diameter.

Try to eliminate the unwanted elements in the phots (distracting background elements ) .

And play with  the lighting to get different effects and contrast/colours

I did. I wanted to see how the aperture worked out. I was losing the light and on a not very good tripod the f22 took 0.8 sec so not ideal and the lens had no IS.

Probably the best tripod is a mono pod. Use a strong fishing rod rest, adjustable with a 3/8 to camera adaptor, couple of quid off Ebay, made of brass, last a lifetime. Use the cameras timer. 

In macro you need a smaller aperture. 5.6 or under. I would have gone for 2.8 unless you can go lower. I always work in aperture value only and allow the camera to sort the speed. A small aperture will blur the background leaving the foreground sharp and clear.
