Greetings SS,

I believe that your only course is 'bodies on the ground'. You need to have people watching your land and birds at all hours. Sorry mate, but I've seen these problems in the past and the only way to stop the morons/poachers/thieves is a person watching.

PS. don't carry a weapon, the little **** will call the plods.

Again, sorry mate, another sign of our so called PC society.

Could always try 'bodies under the ground' in a pit, lined with lime.

Just bury them somewhere they won't be found.

Such a shame people have to resort to mindless destruction.

I would'nt rule out the anti's either- they are known to commit so called called acts of what they call 'merciful killing' to also throw poeple of the scent to avoid thinking it was them.

The camera's are a good thing, but I would suspect the average shoot is unable to afford them. I would say they are good if you can hide them well to stop them being stolen as well.

Trouble is what do you do if you catch the culprits?

Most of us on here can look after ourselves, but if you are in the middle of nowhere and there is a few of them it could be precarious. We had seen tragic news of late of a couple of deaths of adults who had been set upon by gangs of youths as young as 12 or 13 years of age.

This is a busy time of year for many of us, and we have from all sides- The anti's, the authorities and of course the vandals in pursuit of our interest. All I can say is soldier on, do nothing stupid and do the best to enjoy what is left.

There are a few things to add, firstly has the landowner or anyone else had a word with ****** on the land as this sounds like a deliberate message we've had similar after words with dog men and closing off access into fields. The problem is you simply don't know who you are dealing with and confronting them is not a good idea, best move if they are there is a call into the local plod saying you think you've got armed poachers that way you get a response.

Getting anyone to confront and scare the **** out of them only works if the people you use are complete mentalists. Our local keeper is the only person i know who has had enough of a run in that they didn't dare come back for retaliation and believe me the action wasn't something most people would do.

The biggest problem you have is any confrontation that leads to them wanting revenge could screw up your entire shooting year, by the very nature of pheasant rearing they are left alone for long periods of time so are easy to get at. there have been cases where drinkers have been poisoned etc all dead easy for someone with a grudge to do. Your best option at the moment in my mind is repair the damage and visit more at differing times of day and hope it was a one off, if anyone is there observe before doing anything try and get vehicle details as if they are registered properly then if they are using it while damaging pens etc then the vehicle can be seized. Get hold of your local rural police officer so he knows what is going on and you may even find they will offer to run the occasional patrol round seems any excuse to use their 4x4 gets them out!

SS, you could always try for a variation mate. If Herts plod doesn't already class chavs as vermin then they need to reappraise their classifications. Seriously though be very careful, these type of people know the law better that most barristers and if you do anything to upset their delicate little selves you'll end up on the wrong end of an assault charge quickly followed by a law suit faster than you can call pull. Best bet is to hope that they've had their 'fun' and won't come back you don't want to start a war.

Its not ******, poachers, antis or anyone with any grudges, its brain dead scumbag kids 15-16 year olds, from a nearby "bad area".

We may have a break through here, one of our syndicate members is from the above bad area & he's also the football manager for the under 16's, he's pretty confident that if he dosen't know them he'll know someone who does. He holds a bit of sway with the youngsters around that area & he knows how to get at them without the use of violence, its no use going to the parents as they are worse than the kids (his words not mine)

I'm taking him to meet my gamekeeper mate to see if he can identify any of the offenders from photos of them, off his phone.

Hopefully we can get this sorted in a nice gentlemanly way :D

If not the gloves are off

Can sympathise with you there mate as we had exactly the same 2 weeks ago....pen door smashed, fen traps stamped on,electric fence cut in 2 places and some birds clubbed to death.

Think they were at it just as 1 of the shoot turned up to check as the dead birds were still warm.Put it down to kids as it was during the school holidays.

Luckily they haven,t been back and most of the poults were either back in the pen or around it next morn.We stepped up the checks and varied the times.

Hope you get through it too..such is life these days

They were back at 17.15 today, this time a camo clad loon with a baseball bat & a fierce looking golden retreiver  was waiting.

I jumped out at them from the bushes, there was 6 of em about 15 - 16 years old, & 5 took to there feet. I got one of em & after being able to sleep on it last night I was quite calm, I made it quite clear to him that if they were to return I wouldn't be so nice, explained that there were hidden traps all over the place & they risked getting shot by a stray bullet whilst I'm out foxing.

He was ******** himself & promised they wouldn't come back, I called the guy in our syndicate who lives locally, & by luck he was coming up the road in the direction they fled. After a while of us both looking for them my mate found them on the other side of our wood . By all accounts he wasn't as nice ;) they admitted to ripping down the pen & killing the birds. He got all there names & thinks he knows one of there dads.

He mentioned the large pheasant shoot where my game keeper mate has been having all the trouble & they swore it wasn't them, although the descriptions are very similar.

I feel a bit happier now I've seen them & know where they're getting in, so I'll have a few surprises in store for them (thanks Winchester <_< ) should they decide to return.

Hopefully this is all settled now, we shall see.

Hi SS

Sorry about all this bad news, glad that you have managed to catch some of these mindless thugs, and that you can hopefully continue the hard work needed to getting the shoot back on track, The positives from this is that it as highlighted all the hard work you have put in, that you should get additional help from everyone in the syndicate. Remember you have PW members locally who would be more than happy to walk there dogs.

I will make a point to walk Jess around that way over the weekends (mornings) if I'm not doing any field sports. I get Peltman to pass on your mobile number if that alright with you, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Really sorry to hear all this, but i'll tell you something.... When l was younger ( a lot younger) me and a few mates knew where some phesants used to roost in a local wood. These phesants weren't reared nor part of a shoot as such, but we used to 'pop' in once or twice a month to get one or two a peice for the pot. Someone cottoned on that shot the woods and waited for us - my god i've never been so bloody scared in my life, once we got there they didn't really do a lot, just coughed etc. We **** ourselves and started looking around in the dusk with our scopes on our air-rifles and i'm telling you now there's nothing scarier than looking through your scope and seeing someone looking straight back at you! Never the less ran 2 miles home (the long way) and was met by my dad and the 'shooting bloke' got a ####ing from me dad whilst he was there. When he left my dad said ' you daft ****** - you'll have to go somewhere else now'

Point is you dont have to say anything (prob not worth going to the parents either) Like others have said before me a serious Psychological scaring will do wonders! I've never been back! Take turns with the other in your shoot to spend a few hours looking over the birds and scare them if they come back. Remember that chav kids want to be back and drinking in the streets by dark and now the holidays are over you prob only have to look at being there at weekends~

so he made a pnumatic cannon that fired potatoes (he said he'd seen it on scraphead challenge <_<)

Potato cannons are illegal to make and posses in Blighty.

I read that somewhere. I always fancied making one, but now I have the 12g the novelty factor wouldn't be as good as when I was 15. I wonder if you could fire a chunk of spud from a reduced load 12g shell?

i believe that british law states that any home made weapon that uses a propelant,ie compressed air, butane, hair spay, deodourants etc, are completely illeagle, where as things like home made catapaults are ok its then just a matter of how and where its used. seems a bit daft that the plans for such items are so easily available on the internet but hey thats life.

also im pretty sure that if you were to shot a minor with a paintball gun for tresspassing you would very quickly find yourself on an assult charge, you cant even touch the little ******** these days without the risk of getting nicked and if you do anything to intimidate the **** they could have you up on a theatening behavour charge. not that itd bother me that much though

nice to hear that a solution was found though and one that didnt require violence at that, on the up side you could always have them done for tresspassing, criminal damage, etc and report the incident to the rspca and have them done for cruelty to animals as well, maybe mummy and daddy wont like the compensation bill and legal costs enough to sort out the little ****, seeing as the one thing that always gets a message through in this country is money, hitting back at the wallet mite show some dividends.

still id have covered them in bird feed and shut them in a pen with a load of your hungry feathered friends then take great delight in knowing that every time grandmas pet budgie goes tweet theyll wet themselves and hide in a corner crying for mummy

Tar and feathered is a far more befitting punishment, I see it a couple of times in Ireland and was more shocked by that than many other things I saw.

Had a meeting last night with my game keeper mate, guy off our syndicate from the area & his young son.

Names & descriptions were exchanged, his son was brilliant, describing to a tee the offenders even giving nick names that the keeper had heard, unfortunatly the pictures off the phone were ****. But we now know who they are & where they live.

My mate from the area is going to have a little chat  with the ring leaders & if this dosen't have the desired effect, some seriously huge guys are chomping at the bit to pay em a visit

I've left a few surprises for them should they return to our patch (thanks winchester) :welcomeani:

So hopefully this is settled
