Yes its Hellebores MANTONATUREGETTY IMAGES Hellebores, also known as Lenten roses, are super low-maintenance plants. Their quiet beauty is best noticed when viewing up close, or try snipping blooms to float in a bowl of water, as their pretty blooms grow downward-facing. Walker570
As above, the one you show is near enough the wild version but they have now bred a variety of colours. Needs an elevated bed in a garden or high mounted tub to show the flowers best as they hang down.. Nice cut flower and last well in water. Hector Vector
Bear in mind that Hellebores can be toxic to dogs.
The Mighty Prawn
thanks all, I concur with your knowledge that the mystery is solved - annoyingly it means the wife was right as she thought it might be a Hellebore
JohnfromUK
I have green ones like the above - and both white and a sort of dusky pink that fades to a brown as the flower ages. The green are in flower now, but the pink and white pretty much over. They like it here (I'm probably barely 20 miles south of you) and grow almost like weeds! Jim Neal
"Christmas Rose" according to my app I wouldn't want it in my garden if my dogs were the sort that had a chew on the greenery...
lord_seagrave
Helleborus is a great plant, and a nice clump of them with some support makes for a fabulous low-maintenance flora early in the year. Periodically inspect to remove any blackened or damaged leaves and cut them right back later in the year. As others have said, there is a beautiful range of dusky pinks and purples that look very exotic, but they are hard as nails and that clump will keep expanding year on year.
