WalkedUp
Gamebirds are now included as livestock, whilst tended for. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/wild-birds-licence-to-kill-or-take-to-prevent-serious-damage-gl42/gl42-general-licence-to-kill-or-take-certain-species-of-wild-birds-to-prevent-serious-damage#methods-you-can-use-under-this-licence I can’t recall this previously, if it is old news please let me know. Looks like a good win.

Gas seal
Hi WalkedUp the changes l see is it runs for two years. I would say that’s a positive. I think it’s the first time it’s been for two years.
WalkedUp
Yes good points, if they do two years and release them 12 months in advance then there will not be the chaos of last time. I was surprised that with Princess Nut Nut at the wheel this has occurred. Hopefully she’s preoccupied with the new child.
Gas seal
DEFRA must be confident with the license, it can still be modified or revoked. I haven’t heard about any comments from WJ ,l don’t think they have noticed the change in the license. They shouldn’t be to concerned as (targeted falconry ) is still allowed . I am sure you are quite correct, but that is the most comprehensive update yet, at least some thought has been put in to it this time after the previous balls ups they have issued. I wonder how far we get in to 2022 before Wild Justice start legal action?
WalkedUp
I would imagine their lawyers are back on it today, fresh from their skiing trips in chalets paid for by mad old ladies bequeathing silly money to silly causes. TIGHTCHOKE
Oh yes the good old RSPB that very quietly shoot flying predators around their reserves to help the ordinary birds.
Gas seal
Game birds in captivity have always been classed as livestock. illegally taking a game birds from a pen is theft, illegally taking a game bird from the wild is breaking the game laws. W J are against releasing and recapture of game birds then calling them livestock again.
Fellside
This is the crucial part in bold: “Includes birds kept in an enclosure or which are free roaming but remain significantly dependent on the provision of food, water or shelter, by a keeper for their survival” It essentially redefines the understanding of ‘livestock’ in the GL as before this applied to penned birds only. This is actually quite good news. Of course for the RSPB’s Kate Jennings this appears to have given her an irresistible sounding board in a comic called the Guardian - and she has somehow managed to attach the term ‘climate emergency’ to her duplicitous drivel. Hilarious.

Gas seal
Hi the General License 42 has been updated this month. The update is regarding livestock, footnote 7 . Game birds. Wild or livestock. I can’t put a photo of it on the forum, maybe a member will.

Conor O'Gorman
Defra has confirmed that the England GL42 general licence text was amended to reflect the fact that the law had not changed and that released game birds not largely dependent on gamekeepers for survival do not count as livestock, and that they would be contesting Wild Justice’s claims. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/mar/11/outcry-prompts-u-turn-over-killing-wild-birds-to-protect-game-birds-in-england
