JKD
Yes, a water boatman that has landed,,,, they can fly 😉🙂
Walker570
Is it a 'fly' the front end looks as if it has a bead and protruding from that at the front what looks like the eye of a hook
Dougy
Can you call them boat-men nowadays ???. Just asking .... Maybe Waterboat person of neutral gender. The long back legs do look like one though, probably stranded after it's ponds dried up
JKD
These water 'boat-things' live in water but fly up into the atmosphere to mate 🙂

Bobba
There is a new contender. The D-in-Law of my shooting buddy has searched the web and is of the view that it is a Cicada. Below is photo from the web of a Cicada. The eyes are very similar and suggest she may be right.
Windswept
I think we only have one type Cicada in the UK, down in the New Forest and it doesn't look like the top photo. As has been said, it's a water boatman, the back legs give it away, much thicker than a cicada.
ditchman
you need to pray that aint a cicada.................not unless you are an insomniac.....
Pushandpull
Notonecta sp. probably N.obliqa if you look it up (there are four species.as I recall).

JKD
It's definitely a water boatman 👍 https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tTP1TcwrSrPLjZg9OItTyxJLVJIyk8syU3MAwBudAjA&q=water+boatman&oq=&aqs=chrome.5.69i58j69i64j35i39i362i523l3j46i39i362i523j35i39i362i523l2j46i39i199i362i465i523j35i39i362i523l6.-1j0j4&client=tablet-android-ee-uk-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-
Pushandpull
JKD Your reference comes up with corixids, and particularly Corixa punctata (NB no capital on specific name). These are so-called detritus feeders. If you have ever been bitten by a Notonecta (any species) you will appreciate the difference as they are active carnivores. It feels like a sting. I did some work on N.maculata once in another life and they are handled with care.

Pushandpull
Correct as regards the single image. It is a bit of a muddle on water boatmen in general cobbled together by someone who was, I suspect, better at birds than insects.
TIGHTCHOKE
Gordon Bennett!

Pushandpull
Final attempt - GB notwithstanding. The material in your reference is about corixids. There is one photo of a Notonecta seen alive (so inverted) which does not belong. Different animal, different family, different habits. About as inappropriate as a photo of a fox in a piece about rabbits. It's trivial but let's get it right.
JKD
Blimey,,,, try to help someone identify a "bug" and get shot down with pedantics and Latin names,,,, WOW !!! Cheers 😘
Pushandpull
The OP wanted an answer and got an accurate one - that's not pedantic. "Water boatman" covers a multitude of varying species, which is why "Latin" names of living organisms are used and understood by specialists of every nationality. You were not "shot down" but your response was a good illustration of the fact that research via the internet does not always yield accurate results. Most of it was from an RSPB source and even they can get things wrong !
