Can you call them boat-men nowadays ???.

Just asking ....

Maybe

Waterboat person of neutral gender.

The long back legs do look like one though, probably stranded after it's ponds dried up

You forgot to add that they are now classed as sentient beings?

JKD Your reference comes up with corixids, and particularly Corixa punctata (NB no capital on specific name). These are so-called detritus feeders. If you have ever been bitten by a Notonecta (any species) you will appreciate the difference as they are active carnivores. It feels like a sting. I did some work on N.maculata once in another life and they are handled with care.

Yes, but the first image, and just looking at the OP's first picture, are one and the same ?

Final attempt - GB notwithstanding. The material in your reference is about corixids. There is one photo of a Notonecta seen alive (so inverted) which does not belong. Different animal, different family, different habits. About as inappropriate as a photo of a fox in a piece about rabbits. It's trivial but let's get it right.

The OP wanted an answer and got an accurate one - that's not pedantic. "Water boatman" covers a multitude of varying species, which is why "Latin" names of living organisms are used and understood by specialists of every nationality.

You were not "shot down" but your response was a good illustration of the fact that research via the internet does not always yield accurate results. Most of it was from an RSPB source and even they can get things wrong !
