April rape.

Unlike Charles Dickens I had no great expectations today.

This part of the world has had 300% of the average March rainfall so squelching round rape fields fully loaded with kit has not been an option. Even the early April days of sunshine were soon cancelled out by heavy rain. Ironically today when I did shoot over rape I saw the first drillings.

I just had to get out in the 25mph wind so chose the easy option of a field two miles from home. Feeling sure about another failure over winter rape I even left the dogs at home.

What do I know? Within ten minutes of setting up I had ten pigeons in the bag. I have rarely seen pigeons decoy so well into April rape. They came fast and furious for eighty minutes when I expended the last of my fifty cartridges.

I carried my kit and the picked pigeons back to the car, went home for the dogs and went picking the stragglers. The bag was 35 pigeons.

Well done for getting into them.

I'm a couple of hours away from home this week and can't belive the difference in crops and birds.

Here, near Boston, all fields are flowering rape and there's 100s of pigeon and crow flying all around.

Sat fishing today and the amount of low flying pigeon (and dove) I lost count.

Good result in the time frame and the amount of shells expanded , your rape look three to four weeks behind the field down this way , yesterday we passed fields that were well in flower and easily four to five feet high , we also passed the first spud field being planted .

That ole cartridge bag looked well used and by previous accounts it isn't the first time you ran out of shells , I take about the same and I only wish I would run out now and again , I am well passed the school boy error that we hear about from time to time and I would be very happy using two boxing up and leaving my bag empty

Cracking stuff Jdog!
I’ve shot a total of 16 pigeons in one outing just after the snow on rape all winter, never had such poor numbers here…..the novelty of driving round looking is wearing thin!
Went out this afternoon after seeing a good few going into some rough drilling but alas they weren’t there today in any numbers and I only managed 15.

Your unexpected 35 in a short space of time is what pigeon shooting is all about, keep it up (maybe even take 100 shells next time) 👍🏼
