ordnance
Recently my wife was renewing the house insurance, she was asked about any safes in the house she mentioned that I had a long sale not saying what it was for. The insurance broker asked was it a gun safe she said yes and was informed that the company we were with did not insure homes with firearms in the home, we got it insured with another company that did insure the house and the firearms. So basically the house had not been insured for nearly a year, something to watch out for.

It was trough an insurance broker, they just said the company we were with did not insure homes with guns in the house. I did not see any point in askng why, they got us a policy with another company. 1 hour ago, Bailey20 said: Did you also insure your guns under your house insurance? Did you premiums go up by much? Yes the guns are now insured under the house insurance, extra £200. It had near double over the year before anyway with the previous insurer. I have only just recently mentioned on the forum about a problem I had with Aviva house insurance , I had been with them seven years since we moved into the house I am in now , I had insured both house and contents on the same insurance for just over £200 , when we discovered we had a underground leak I thought rather than have the hassle in getting builders in to sort it out I will put it through the insurance company , I pay £750 excess and they go up to 5K , after a lengthy talk over the phone I was told I wasn't insured for accidental damage , which I never caused the accident in the first place so how was it accidental damage ? , I still didn't get a penny so to be honest I don't even know what I am insured against . Minky
I found that not many insurance companies cover guns. We are with Saga and they have held the same premium for about 3 years so we've stayed with them. Edited October 26 by Minky

The fact that they did not cover guns was not the issue, the issue was that the house insurance was invalid because they did not cover homes with firearms in the house. steve_b_wales
My firearms are covered on my home insurance under sporting goods, at no extra charge. I just had to state if any were worth over £1000 (quite a few) and all was okay,

Did the insurance company state this condition in any document issued to you in previous years? If not, it sounds as though you been paying for cover that the insurer never intended to provide. Dave at kelton
You need to watch this carefully. There are several other points. You need to check when your guns are covered. Some cover them but not unless secured so not in a slip in a car. Others won’t cover more than one gun out of the cabinet at a time. As I have a “small collection” I have had to take out specialist home insurance with Covea and it’s not cheap. They did pay out on repairs a few years ago though when I fell and knocked the loop off the barrel!

Scully
NFU insured me for everything in the house. She told me if you picked your house up and tipped it up, everything which fell out was insured. I told her my cabinets wouldn’t fall out as they were bolted in, but you get the jist! 🙂
PhilR
NFU for me too. Contents and building insurance. Guns are specified items and are covered both in and out of the home. My house is grade 2 listed and that wasn't a problem either. Premium not cheap but they do offer a discount if not claims are made.

London Best
I came to the conclusion a long time ago that ‘WE’ are over-insured as a Nation. Now I only have the bare minimum of necessary or compulsory insurance. I have not bothered to insure my guns since about the mid 1990’s when I thought the premium was becoming too much. London Best
About 2010 I shot with an old acquaintance and noticed he was using a Beretta. I enquired where the Purdey was and he said he had sold all three pairs (12/20/28, all OU) because the insurance had gone up to £15k per year. manthing
I'm with nfu too, only have to list items over £2000 iirc. Guns and cabinet were mentioned but the value was the only stipulation.
