Shambam1962
I have been thinking of trying to turn a few shotgun chamber brushes for a while. A big thank you to Old Boggy for helping me with dimensions, and kindly posted his very nice rosewood brush the next day to me, to take measurements off. I played around with a prototype style and finally decided on the ones in the photos. I had a set of threading taps, which matched the brush end and proceeded to turn the handle to the shape I required. I tapped the brush end to accept the Bisley and Parker Hale type brushes. I ordered a piece of brass rod and turned it on the wood lathe, and drilled and tapped to secure the brass to the handle. The 2 handles in the photos are Walnut (light coloured) and Wenge ( dark coloured) and pleased with how they turned out. Shambam1962
Thank you all for your comments, and I’m going to tweak the design a bit. I’m going to rework the brass on the walnut brush , as this was the first one I completed, and tidy up the profile. I made a prototype handle out of Sapele for the measurements from Old Boggy’s chamber brush

Old Boggy
Absolutely brilliant craftsmanship as usual. Excellent choice of wood too. Well done Kevin. You realise that you now have to make a presentation box for it to reside in. OB

OB Cheers Chris, I am going to play around with a few different wood handles, and see which I prefer, and this time next year, I will advertise a few for sale on PW. I have made a few different things over the last year, and really enjoyed the challenge of trying to make them satisfactory. The thought of making a presentation box to display the chamber brushes is something that I think is above my capabilities 😩 I have looked at videos on YouTube of people making supposedly simple wooden boxes, and I know my attempts would definitely not look like theirs. Maybe, trying to make a decent looking presentation wooden box will be my next project, and will look out for some ideas.

The box would have to look as good as the product inside, and I know my attempt wouldn’t do it any favours.
JohnfromUK
Just an idea based on two (both commercial products) that I have. See photo. Both of mine have a 'cap' over the brush part. This has two advantages, firstly it keeps the oil/dirt from getting over the rest of the cleaning kit, but secondly and more importantly it prevents the brushes getting crushed and flattened on one side. Cheers John, I have seen them with the brass protectors. I will look into what brass tube and flat plate is available, and they wouldn’t be difficult to make . Thanks 👍

Thanks 👍 I have protectors for ordinary 12 bore brushes - home made from water pipe offcuts (copper) in 18 mm(?) and a penny coin soldered on the end, A bit basic, but a 1p each, whose complaining! They do keep the brushes round and stop the oil from the brushes getting everywhere.

Shambam1962
I completed another Wenge chamber brush today and had a delivery of a few Bisley brass brushes. I machined the brass rod to shape, and found it a bit easier to do, and happy with the results.

If I remember, they had beautiful Walnut handles. I will have to find the original post and take a look 👍 Update : I found the previous post of demonwolf444 beautiful hand made turn screws . It was really informative, and James states he had more hassle making the pine boxes, due to the swelling of the wood, and preventing the lid opening and closing. You find that the straightforward looking things cause the most problems to make. Edited November 27 by Shambam1962
