Yes we start tomorrow for four Saturday afternoons , this is checked out every year and is all above board , we are issued with a permit with your name on it and what wood you are allocated , also a car parking pass with the estates bill head and the logo on the top of the pass , this have got to be left on the top of the dash board , it also state that only fibre wad cartridges to be used , no shooting to and from leaving the woods no rubbish or cartridge cases left behind , only Pigeons , Magpies and Crows and no dogs allowed unless agreed by the owner or the keeper , the permits are £20 and all the money raised go to a charity or someone who have hit on hard times , and no I don't qualify

I didn't go till just gone two and had a ride around first as I like putting a few decoys out along with the magnet , didn't see much although some shooting had started , called my mate up who was in a wood nearby and he had shot 4 , went and had a yarn and when the sun started to go down it turned very cold and the shooting was getting less and less , by 4pm I could see it wasn't worth the trouble in setting a few decoys up and as we were both feeling the cold we called it a day , I might be wrong but I doubt if there were many , or even any double figures shot , a very quiet start .  MM

The 20-acre wood I'm lucky enough to be able to roost shoot still had a lot of visitors but in big flocks, coming quite fast downwind, way up above the already tall trees and very wary. Someone else had shot a nearby wood recently, so that didn't help. Anyway, by showing a lot of restraint and being ultra selective, I was able to let the flocks go round and return, lower and slower, into the wind, this time they were actually thinking about looking for a landing spot (but not landing). Letting most go by, there was usually a Tail-End Charlie or two, which were lower and if they were exactly where I wanted them to be, I felt gave me a reasonable chance of reaching them. I managed to reach 14 of them, using Pigeon Extreme, 34gm No 5 shot, with full choke and about 3 foot of lead. I only used a box of ammo, so was quite pleased!

well done nice some one got some.

I put my "success" down to having a lot of restraint. I saw 100's that Mr Digweed could have shot, but I would have missed over 99% of them (not being very flexible now) and just scared them from returning to give me another chance. By only shooting at those which were just where I wanted them and I thought Kitchrat could hit, I got a decent result. (and a few casseroles!)

What little wind we had just died away down to nothing , very clear skies and when I started to make my way home it was down to freezing point and the shooting all but stopped , when the guns first turned out you could hear some shooting going on and the shooting was mainly double shots which could be a indicator that they were well up .

I will meet one or two at a funeral tomorrow and I will find out what sort of numbers were shot , I never even got on the score board let alone the leader board , I think the days of getting on the leader board are now just a distant memory , now it's the taking part that counts , well that is my excuse
