What are we using?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

With the ever increasing price of cartridges- I was just wondering what everyone is currently using to shoot pigeons.

Over the years I have tried various shot sizes and choke combinations. Many years ago I realised that my go to combination was a trap cartridge with 28g of 7.5 shot or size 7 shot when using continental cartridges.

I have been using Eley Olympic blues through 1/2 & full choke with good results at decoying ranges- up to around 40 yards give or take a few yards either way.

I restocked today and bought fiocchi blacks as they are £20 cheaper a thousand than the Eley’s. I have no doubt they will do the job.

Just my opinion- not trying to tell anyone else what they should be doing.

Cheers

I use any cartridge from 14 grm up to  32 grm in  no 7.5 to no 5  they all kill pigeons and crows .

.410 .20b and 12b it just depends on what I fancy using on the day and where I'm going to set up .same with shooting a few clays .they all break em as long as the clays aren't miles away .if I can have a 50 bird day with  14 grms of .410  then anything you use will be fine .don't over think it. Just buy some cheap carts and get shooting.

Hello, Last few years when i had a go decoying it was the cheapest 7.5s 28g plastic or fibre, Just to add if anyone interested and has to buy cartridges but have shipped, Pellpax are doing free delivery but your need to see cost per 1000s first, The cheapest in 12g is Comp X. Although not as many Makes/ Types as Just Carts

A very sensible post.

Keep posting common sense like that could result in a forum ban!😉

My go to combination for pigeons is Eley Pigeon Select through 3/8th. Works really well for me. The same cartridge through my full choked trap guns is devastating on crows even way out there.

Same here, but through 1/8th and 3/8ths, through my .715 bore Baikal. Got a fox at 10yds yesterday from the hide with that combination, which dropped like a stone. The same cartridge through my full/full Beretta SxS works very well for distant crows as well.

At that range a ruddy tiger would have dropped like a stone, never mind a fox!

Would it be a little more acceptable if I revealed that the previous shot dropped two pigeons at once and the chance of getting a fox and two pigeons with two shots lead to a slight reduction of sportsmanship.😉

No sportsmanship necessary where foxes are involved with shotguns!

Thank you for the replies.

I have followed advice from many pigeon shooters over many years and have settled on 28g no 7.5 or 7 shot for decoying- the bonus is that they we have an extensive range of trap cartridges to choose from at prices to suit everyone’s pocket. Looking forward to giving the FBlacks a go.
