cracking day on the rape

After a recent meeting with a few local farmers regarding the number of pigeon hitting the rape 8 of the 25 that attended the meeting were out at dawn this morning.

We met at the farmers office & were briefed on the fields that were getting the worst of the attention, while munching on hot sausages in baps and steaming tea :good: We were then all issued detailed maps of all the farms, the most likely spots were numbered 1 to 8 and we then drew "pegs", I just happened to draw the plum peg & after chucking a couple of quid in to the sweep for the most birds shot we all went on our way.

I was set up just as it was getting light & the rain that was forecast stopped about 8 am and right on cue the birds started to arrive , I was set up in a hedge with a fairly strong wind directly in my back with a classic horseshoe pattern 25 yd s out with the magnet bang in the middle, & a bouncer about 150 yds out to guide them in.

I couldn't of had the birds coming in any better, one after the other they came along the power lines in front of me heading straight towards the whirly, I could here the others were in the birds as well and by 11 I had 45 on the clicker

The Peltman who was about a mile away was n't having much joy so upped deeks & moved location, we all had the 11 o'clock lull, then by 12 they just started coming thick & fast, there was another lull between 1 & 2.30, then things went berserk  I was fast running out of carts & a frantic call to the farmer was needed for some more carts.

I was picking my shots wisely & had a cracking spell where I couldn't miss  that made up for earlier when I had about 10 shots for no birds  By this time I was out of carts & had to watch as birds poured into my pattern  Thankfully the farmer arrived just in time for the most frantic shooting I've had in a long while, they were desperate to get a feed before roosting for the night & I was racking up bird after bird.

3.30 and birds were still about, but I needed to have a good pick up even though Becky my goldie was working tirelessly all day, I then had what I can only describe as a Benny Hill moment, me out in the killing zone picking birds while they were still coming in, so there I was running back to the hide, shooting a few more , then picking a few more & so on .

I ended the day with 110 picked & 119 on the clicker for 196 cartridges, & collectively we had an overall total of 300 birds :)

The farmer was well happy & is eagerly organising the next day.

We'll be out tommorrow with the ferts to address his rabbit problem B)

SS forgot to tell you he took the money as well :good:.

I had only 5 birds berfore i moved, the peg i drew was shooting over Coriander. i moved at around 1pm to the other end of the field where i saw around 20 - 30 pigeon and the same amount of blackies.

I had to set up with the wind from right to left and slightly into my face. shooting out the back of my Susuki Vitara 30 yards away from a large wood behind me I had the magnet out about 30 yards to my right with a large block of 20 of last weeks pigeon running slighly back towards me and another block of 20: 35 to 40 yards out in front. The problem was the pigeon were coming in full tilt from the right with the wind, over the magnet and turning away from me over the far block of decoys then landing. So i had to take the birds as they came fast in over the magnet. i called SS about 2.30pm to seee how many he had on the clicker, he said he had around 70 birds i told him that i was catching up fast and had a fight on his hands :)

From then on it was like the Battle of Britain, with tens of birds over head going in every direction. With a fast growing sore right thumb from breaking the barrels to reload, i was notching up fast  and from 1pm till 3pm when all went quite apart from the odd bird till 3.30pm i'd taken at a guess around the ton mark but with a dence wood behind me i only managed to pick 84 woodys, 4 crows and 3 Ferals for 175 carts B) not enough to catch SS but in that short space of time well happy

So out of 8 hides set up, around 200 of the 300 birds taken were taken by myself and SS

Well done SS  i'll get me money back next time

Cheers SS...........I presume my invitation got lost in the post..??

Cat.

:good: Sorry Cat, I will one day return the compliment, but you I'm sure will understand how guarded other people view there permission, & this farm is one that I've been trying to get my foot in the door for years, I didn't want to put anyones nose out of joint on my first day :)

The other point is the shooting could be a bit of a lottery as regard to drawing the pegs, although the farmer did his best to keep the birds on the move & moving anyone that wasn't in the shooting, some of his regular lads that have shot there for years , barely managed double figures

And the 3 newcomers cleaned up as regards to the shooting :oops:

Its all about keeping the birds on the move, but they still have there favourite fields B)

Pelty what you forgot to mention was my winnings from the sweep didn't cover the round at the bar afterwards

Cheers guys for all the other replys
