Stealth Stalker
The Peltman had seen a fair amount of pigeon trying to get in to tramlines & edges of wheat on the farm we had the organized rape days on in the winter, so we had been watching out for any laid patches that may appear from all the storms we've been having lately, but the farmers growing the short legged variety which seems to stands up very well to the worst the weather can muster :o So imagine my surprise to see earlier on in the week on one of my recces, the hundred yard long muckheap that borders the field ablaze & a fire engine sat in the field keeping the flames at bay from the wheat, the engine driver had to drive through the wheat a safe distance from the blaze, thus flattening a nice area around the heap A quick call to Pelty had us hatch a plan to shoot the laid area at the weekend, Pelty got in touch with the farmer only to be told that the fire brigade were gonna be staying in the field for 3 days to keep the smoldering heap under control as houses border the entire field We set off on Saturday morning armed with 400 shells , 2 magnets, flappers, floaters & deeks, only to find someone had beaten us to it, there was a Landie parked up by the much heap We watched for a while only to see pigeons flighting over the other shooters out of range & landing in the field behind them near the houses, so no option to shoot there, we had a little recce over the rest of the farm. Very little was about so Pelty decided to go back to the heap to see who it was shooting there. As we turned up we were greeted by a couple of the other guys in the syndicate that were packing up for the day, they'd been there from 7am and had shot about 50 birds. RESULT We set up at the top end of the muck heap near where the engine had turned around flattening the largest area, with our backs to a strong wind, the plan being to drop the pigeon in the laid area so they could be picked. We set 2 magnets about 25 yds out from the hide either side of the "round about" left by the turning fire engine, 3 floaters were placed 70 out in front of the magnets & birds were dropping in as we were setting up. Pelty went & flagged off the area near the houses where we glassed the birds were flighting to past the other decoyers. All set up & in the hide for 9.45am. Let the shooting commence. We were taking it in turns to shoot & from the out set birds were decoying beautifully in to the pattern, we were deliberatly leaving anything that wasn't in the kill zone, & it wasn't long before we were near the 100 tally on the clicker, a quick tidy up of birds that were belly up or (cooking on the smoldering heap beside us) We were starting to think of our own records, mine being 177 & Pelty never quite reaching the 100, it was obvious to us that this was gonna be a big day :o the birds were constant, I doubt if there was a lull of more than 3 or 4 minutes all day. We were both shooting well with very little getting past us & it wasn't long before the 200 was up on the clicker & still they came, we started being a bit less choosier with our birds & Pelty was pulling off some corking shots, birds folding dead in the air & taking an age to plummet to the ground. I had a memorable high rocketing double. It was about this time that Pelty had a call from Catcherpelt who lives close by & was house bound with chores from the missus, mowing the lawn he was going stir crazy hearing the banging coming from our field He was gagging to get out & share in some of the action, so Pelty not one to miss a trick invited him along on the previso that 500 carts were delivered, he was down to his last box We were then setting our sights to the 250 mark with a constant look over our shoulders at the dark clouds that were looming behind us, it was about 4pm & heavy rain was forecast. Catcherpelt was set up about 150 yds to our left at the end of the heap & was soon getting birds coming into his pattern, but we were still pulling the majority, at about 5.45pm we hit the 250 tally & we were both feeling knackered & not looking forward to picking up, a few more birds were shot & we called it a day sleeving our guns with birds still pouring in to the deeks. We began picking from the kill zone & our decision to select the birds paid off, the area was blue with birds, I then went to the truck & got Molly my young Lab who had been picking up any runners earlier in the day, to work the hedge to our right that we had dropped several birds in, & she did a brilliant job retrieving about 30 plus birds that would have been lost to charlie The total number of birds picked was 210, as we were very conscious of causing more damage to the crop trampling around looking for birds. The 256 clicked birds were definate dead birds as we are both very competetive and anything that burtst in to a cloud of feathers then flew off was not clicked. So in all probability I would say we easily killed 280 plus. Pic of the final bag picked Sorry for the long winded post, hope you stayed with it Cheers Stealth Stalker

the pelt man
Started the hard graft this morning back at the muck heap, breasting out the Pigeon. Throwing the left overs on the muck heap to burn. Need to give Pigeon shooting a rest now for a week at least until my very sore shoulder recovers The field over the road of us was Blue with a good 1000 - 2000 pigeon dropping in on the wheat, so plenty more shooting to go. Thanks must go out to Catcherpelt for bringging us more carts or we would have been throwing stones at the end Great days shooting SS, and the much needed Abbots after to chill and talk about the days shoot. SS you forgot to say about the YELLOW BALLOON he missed at 40 yards that blew through the pattern. When we were packing away we had a couple more balloons fly pass but SS's gun was tucked away, beter luck SS. Forgot to say, I was breasting out the birds this morning when a perfect formed EGG popped out the **** of a pigeon. It just needed to harden of. I've not seen that before. Cheers PELTMAN

catcherpelt
Life just grand in the south of England ( Excellent write up SS / PM ) Hearing the shooting from my garden I contacted PM to check who were out in the field, discovering to my delight fellow shooters , both in need of more ammo left the gardening to the Wife (not a happy bunny ). I join in with the fun, only taking out a 30 pigeon in the the time there, but watching text book pigeon decoying to my right was good to witness. My plans for the weekend had started earlier than expected, Pigeon shooting on a Saturday afternoon with PM and SS, just behind us on the line of bushes were Red Plums and Gage flavoured Plums, just right for picking so now we have plenty of plums for sauce's / jams, After a few beers with everyone to discuss the day shooting, I left everyone to place out some crayfish nets around 8pm Saturday, up early on Sunday morning to shoot some rabbits x 6 for the ferrets , collected Crayfish nets total x175 met up with PM to help breast out pigeon, using the hot ashes cooked up some crayfish boiled a egg enjoyed some plums . As I wrote at the beginning "LIFE JUST GRAND IN THE SOUTH " Well done PM and SS NB One Wife looking for a new partner Catcherpelt
