No joy for me this morning over a flight pond, Good morning for it, there was a good wind blowing, i heard a few mallard flying about but none in range, i didnt expect too much as the ducks usually come to the pond nearer the end of september, but it was still nice to get out on the 1st

Tide flighted the Tay and wished I had stayed at home !

As I arrived there was a single mallard duck passing close in, so I was hopefully. After setting up a pair came towards the deeks as I was returning to the reeds and even with a bit of calling and a quick circle round they decided the big lump was a bit suspect :)

Half an hour later and two labs just about knock me over and start bouncing all over my hide, so I walk a few yards back to the top of the sea wall to see a guy wander up and say "Duck shooting, anything doing ?" and wander past me to the water where one of his dogs grabs a deek !!! I shout to him and he says, cheerily "I`ll go further along" and sets off further along.

Not a sorry for his dog dragging the deek in or an apology for disturbing me........really the only way to be more rude was to take a swig of my tea. Don`t know about the dogs but he will get a hoof up the farter next time

I was on montrose basin & there was very little moving & i had 4 single mallard at diffrent times & 1 teal & 1 golden eye pass me low on the river & i opted to leave them as i felt they were unsafe. I got 1 shot with my newish beretta urika mk11 at a golden eye & was spot on so the dog got a water retrieve.

On my arrival there was wildfowlers below me & on the other bank about 120yrd & they had 2-3 mallard come by & 1 young pricked duck came up to me. There dog came out for it but gave up so i sent my dog on for them & offerd it back to them but they said to keep hold of it & left with out asking for it so i have a mallard & golden eye in the shed.

Im off out tonight to try the rocks/coast on a spot i know but the tide aint good till thursday night really but should be fun nice wind going here.

Went out to a local mere where there were a good 250 greylags grazing on grass, two fields down from the boundary where I can shoot.

Watched them from 6 till after dark, but they were all leaving in groups and either flighting onto a stubble field over the road, or turning and heading towards the reserve - well out of range.

Maybe next time

got to the car park at 11 the night before, second to arrive. By midnight four more had arrived then a couple of stragglers in the early hours. No real reason to get there stupidly early but we do, its tradition on the first, about the only time we are sociable! Anyway, eight guns out, no shots between us, worse opener I can recall, warden reckons about 3500 geese are on the refuge but the flighlines to the stubbles all bypass the shooting zone. Only saw 12 mallard and 10 teal.

Went out yesterday evening and seen a good few canadas in front and behind but nothing came over our heads.

Had a couple of mallards appear but never took the shot, as i thought they were a little high for a clean shot to be honest.

But nice to be out again and looking forward to another go, over the weekend
