NickB65
We have a client that shoots and is very good and we want to buy him a good field folding knife. He is disabled and has a clubbed hand which is no bother shooting but when it comes to skinning game or threading rabbits legs he needs to wedge the knife between him club hand and thigh and this is not great. Is there a knife that has a thumb "notch" which he can open one handed and which locks in place? I am aware assisted knifes are illegal but I am not asking for a spring loaded one just one based on thumb use.
tx4cabbie
Spyderco make good Knives, delica is a good sized model made from vg10 steel, easy to sharpen and reasonably corrosion resistant. Come.with a thumbhole in the blade for easy opening. Svord peasant is cheap, and.carbon steel so takes a wicked.edge that is easy to sharpen, rusts if you don't clean but a quick wipe on oily rag will do, and friction folder means.no lock, so UK legal if you get the mini version, and easy to open using the extended tang. Look on heinnie Haynes website, knives galore with prices from pennies onwards.
Flynn
I have a Boker which is UK legal (blade is precisely 3 inches), it holds an edge and can be opened single handedly. You can also move the thumb catch "thingy" to several positions making it easier to open the blade. The only thing it doesn't do is lock, but if does have a deep finger choil, which may or may not be of use depending on how the guy holds the quarry as he's skinning/threading it. I bought it from Heinnie Haynes but it and equivalents should be available anywhere that stocks decent knives. http://www.heinnie.com/boker-plus-knives-xs as an example. southeastpete
Assisted knives aren't illegal. If it opens totally mechanically ie a push button flick blade it is illegal but an assisted opener where you do most of the action isn't. A great one is the SOG flash 2. Available in half serrated or straight blade. Great knives. http://www.sogknives.com/flash-ii-straight-edge.html I've looked around, they can be found between £40-60 depending on handle colour and serrated or not. Edit to add, it does lock open, also has a lever to lock closed. But is still legal if he is carrying it for game preparation etc. safer too. I can open and close mine one handed. Ps I do not work for SOG. Wish I did though, great stuff, their multi tools are way better than leather man/gerber Edited December 17, 2014 by southeastpete

rimfire4969
There are a lot of assisted opening knifes or knifes with a hole or pin on the blade to help opening. My favorite make is Fallkniven but I think Kershaw and Boker to name a few also do some. Have a look at some proper knife porn at www.heinnie.com

arjimlad
A linerlock with a thumb stud will be OK, I would think. Heinnie is a great site ! I have one of their Rough Riders as a daily carry and also a Schrade Imperial which is only £7.95 but excellent quality.

The choils do stop the cutting edge closing on your fingers, but it is still a scary menace of a thing.
39TDS
This legal carry stuff is nuts. It is illegal to threaten or stab people with a knife, can't it be left at that? I would think if you were inclined to ignoring that law a separate law to say you can't carry a knife of a certain size is also going to get ignored. I would love to know the actual statistics of lives/injuries reduced as a result of this law.

I can partly see why it helps the burden of proof as the police cps don't have to show an intent to use the knife just having it is enough. I laughed when a squaddie was pulled up for having a lock knife in Burger King on Salisbury Plain, by all accounts he didn't have a good reason to be carrying it, the assault rifle in the Land Rover was fine mind! I've ended up with a Leatherman micro tool the knife blade is small but the scissors have been very useful and hold a good edge for day to day things
srspower
If you want a high quality 'gentlemans folder' you can't get better than syderco. The tennacious is good value if you can find it at the correct price which is around 30 - 40 quid in the uk. But you van spend a lot more if you want titanium parts and carbon fibre scales etc.

He did advise the security chap that as he was flying the bus he didn't really need a swiss army knife should he have bad intentions and on top of that there is a bloody great axe on the flight deck right behind his seat. He still had the knife confiscated.
NickB65
Well the client was well chuffed with the knife and I was so impressed I got myself one as well. Must admit I don't like the belt clip thing but that can be unscrewed so not an issue. Cracking knife with a very good edge, very light and a lovely grip. Fisheruk
I think this is what you are looking for. I have had one for 10 years, holds a good edge and is ideal for rabbit legs. http://www.fishingmegastore.com/whitby-wildcat-325-black~gfs_658.html
southeastpete
Glad you like them Nick, perhaps I should charge SOG commision lol. I first met SOG in the RAF, they used to issue SOG multi tools. Very good, but quite expensive.
NickB65
Well this little gem is a bargain and so far I can not fault the knife in any way...... I used to use Opinel all the time and my No 7 was always with me... now it has been cleaned, sharpened and oiled and in the draw with the older No 6..... the SOG is he blade of choice.
