  1. This afternoon I was in a Cafe with a friend of mine. As we're both retired we meet up there most afternoons just to chew the fat and put the world to rights over a cup of coffee . Two late teenage girls were sat at the other side of the cafe having a cuppa and snack. My buddy and I usually stay 'til closing time and pay on our way out. After the girls had left the cafe owner came over to us and read out a hand-written note which they'd given her. The note was to the effect "We like to give a little bit of happiness every day and so we have paid for your drinks. All we ask in return is that you do the something for someone else someday to help spread the happiness" The cafe owner told us that she knew the girls and had known that, as children, they had been brought up in extremely abusive households. Hang on, I've got a bit of dust in my eye.
  2. +1 also asking me something then walking out into another room before I can answer, or asking me something whilst she's in another room. I just mumble an answer so she then comes back in and asks me to repeat what I've said. plus leaves every light on in every room even though she's only occupied in one room and also can't turn the taps fully off so, after days of dripping resulting in limescale build up on the washer, they end up constantly dripping until the washer fairy (me) fixes it until the next time. I'm sure I do stuff that annoys her but I can't think of anything
  3. I wish them all the best. The thing that gets me with the media is they act like six year olds in a nursery. "Oooooh look!! Harry's got a girlfriend!!" , "Oooooh look!! they're holding hands!!!" , "Ooooh look!!! They're kissing!!!" They're a pair of adults for gawd sake!! At least Harry doesn't have to creep around any more, best wishes, Harry's a good 'un in my book

Bit of a coincidence that this post has been resurrected, having posted earlier about my dose of it in the early the 70's I'm now suffering a second bout of it. Last Wednesday the left hand side of my head was extremely tender. By Thursday afternoon I couldn't bear to put my cap on and so I got an emergency appointment with my GP because my symptoms pointed to Giant Cell Arteritis ( inflamed artery) which could be serious. I went to Addenbrookes on Friday morning where I had tests for GCA which proved negative so back to my GP on a telephone appointment and she prescribed Aciclovir for me to take if the rash came up over the weekend. Sure enough, Friday night my head was glowing so I started the medication and Ibuprofen It has now spread over the left side of my head and down my forehead and it feels like someone keeps trying to stick an ice pick into my left earhole ( not that I've ever had an ice pick in my ear so I'm not sure what that feels like). Having just recovered from Weil's disease I've now got the nickname 'Lucky' I'm wondering if the Weil's disease and subsequent antibiotics lowered my immune system to the point where the Zoster virus could kick off again. Not that it matters, I've got it anyway. Cancelled shoots, fishing trips and Ukulele band gigs I really could do without it.
  5. Thoroughly enjoyed it, very moving opening number
  6. Yes, I must admit I've only ever seen it that once in this country
  7. In the early 90's on a February evening I stepped out of my front door in, St Ives Cambridgeshire, at 9.30pm to go to town. Although there was a large clear meadow in front of me this was on the other side of a well lit street with the bright lights of the town to my right. As I went down the steps to the street I saw a glow on the Northern horizon then a great swathe of light that I can only describe as being like a great red chiffon scarf rose up from the horizon and waved in the sky for several minutes before fading. I had spent quite a bit of time in Norway so I knew it was an aurora but I was surprised to see it that far south. It was reported on local news the following day that many people had seen it. All I'm saying is, it's worth trying to look wherever you are because they can be seen in far from perfect conditions.
  8. A new power cable was entrenched at the end of our road last week and so the white lining needed restoring to indicate the "giveway" junction. That should do it
  9. That could be a cat-astrophe

Those Giant Trevally put a different aspect on fly fishing
  11. I was a glass engraver and stained glass artist for several years. As has been stated, it has to be a progressive process and cerium oxide is often used for the final polishing phase. A coarse abrasive is used to remove the scratch then progressively finer grits. It all needs to be done with a high speed polisher and water to keep the temperature down. As has also already been said, because of the glass removed, it will probably make it worse, especially at night.

    Storm Ophelia

Was a very spooky afternoon in Cambridgeshire. Very warm and orange.
  13. Thanks for all the messages and an update. Had to have a second round of much stronger antibiotics but I finished that course 3 weeks ago. After 10 days I began to feel rough again and thought the Leprechauns, as my wife calls them, were on the rampage again but from the end of last week I've been feeling much better so I think my own immune system is now holding its own and I'm on the mend. I'm alot more careful about hygene when I'm out and about now, antibacterial hand gels, wipes and gloves etc. I'd just like to repeat, be careful out there and don't skimp on H&S cos it is very unpleasant and Rats don't care who they throw their Leprechauns at.
  14. Just a by the by. I remember an auntie taking me on the transporter that used to run Runcorn to Widnes, before the old new bridge was built, many many years ago.
  15. I play in a Ukulele band, Rocking Ukuleles of St Ives, and I have several ukes. My go to uke is an Ohana TK 20CE. I recommend the Makala Dolphin for beginners because they play well out of the box but can be easily set up to improve tone and playability. They cost about £30 and there's plenty of vids on Youtube to show how to set one up if you want to but they play ok any way. Some of the £15 ones can be impossible to tune. Be aware that all Uke strings take time to stretch in, sometimes 6 to 8 weeks so may need a lot of retuning but, after that, they hold tune and the tone improves. Because of this it is wise to buy a clip-on tuner. I can recommend Southern Ukulele Store or Red Cow Music. Also, check the web for a Ukulele club there's hundreds of them about these days and most towns have one.
  16. Thanks for cheering me up chaps. I've just done 7 days of Doxycycline and I thought it was working but it seems the Leprechauns are fighting back so now I'm on 1500 a day of Amoxicillin and I've just been to hospital for blood tests and they've told me that, if the count is high, they'll pull me in for IV treatment.
  17. Depends whether it's auto or manual. The gas bottles have a date on them as do the bobbins, the auto unit contains a salt pack which dissolves in water. The salt can deteriorate over time and trigger the unit spontaneously, as one did in my cold damp car one night. I always wear a wading jacket with built in auto/manual life jacket in the winter and a Parmaris auto/manual collar type in the summer. Had too many close calls.
  18. My wife reckons I've caught Leptospirosis by mucking about with Leprechauns
  19. Just been diagnosed with Leptospirosis and I'm on antibiotics. Don't take chances if you've got Rats around your pens, it's quite unpleasant.
  20. I parked up briefly last night while my wife went into the petrol station shop to get a couple of drinks. While I was waiting I noticed a silver car with a noisy exhaust on the other side of the forecourt. A young man got out of that car and walk over to the paper towel container nearest to me and removed a handful of paper towels. As he walked back to his car he also checked the paper towel container on the other set of pumps which I assume must have been empty. He then got back into his car and drove off. A few minutes later another silver car with a noisy exhaust pulled up at the pumps nearest to me. The young male passenger got out, opened the paper towel container and took the remaining paper towels from it. As he got back into the car he smiled and waved his handful of paper towels at the young male driver and they then drove off. Does owning a silver car with a noisy exhaust lead to an addiction to paper towels? Is there a market for second hand paper towels?
  21. I'm another one with Flow for G & E. Changed from Sky BB to EE last year because Sky kept dropping out and they gave silly excuses. There is cheaper BB and I've just done a check for other deals but the reviews of some of the other suppliers weren't that good to justify the saving because the supply has been good so I'm staying put with them for now.

    Steam Power

Visited the National Rail Museum in York last week. Fascinating engineering. On the one hand it seems incredibly innefficient with the tender, firebox, boiler et al to generate the steam but, on the other hand, the size of the actual pistons and the load they were pulling seem incredibly efficient. Well worth a visit and it's free admission too.
  23. I don't have to actually do anything wrong, the Police only have to think I might cause harm and they will take away my guns and certificates. There is no good reason to be using a phone whilst driving and a car is as lethal as any firearm. Therefore, I think anyone caught using a mobile phone, or causing an accident as a result of using one, should lose their licence and their car, end of.
