  1. You can't be too careful with your hearing. I made the mistake of buying a couple of thousand cheap shells which went with a louder than usual bang. After that I have now got permanent ringing in the ears (tinnitus), despite wearing ear muffs. I now wear plugs and earmuffs as to not make the tinnitus worse. I did try some solid custom made plugs but found I could still hear conversation behind me. I rang the hearing expert at the custom plug manufacturers and they admitted that sound was also carried by the bones around the ears and that wearing muffs as well as plugs was the best protection. If I want to hear a conversation in between shooting, I lift the muff on my best hearing ear to one side.
  2. Sounds like good news! It will be great to have somewhere else to go locally. Used to shoot there years ago and particularly enjoyed Ray Wing's around the tower shoots on a Saturday morning. All for about £2.50 for 25 birds!
  3. Shot the sporting today and it was an excellent shoot and very well run. Hardly any no birds and no breakdowns. Did not shoot well, expect a lot of the targets were tricker than they looked.
  4. It, as the name implies is set in and around a wood and small lake which are very pleasant surroundings. £25 for 100 birds, good variety over 12 or 13 stands. Button and score yourselves. Good bacon, sausage rolls etc served in and old livery stable. Practice only.
  5. We always start our wood burner on crumpled up newspaper, stips of cardboard and small softwood sticks, wood from palettes is ideal. Then start adding small logs and as the fire progresses larger logs. Once it's going you should have no problem with ash but the drier the better.
  6. Went in 1996 if the same place, track off a track half way up a mountain!! Was still cheap in those days but they also had FITASC sporting on which I really enjoyed.
  7. Try English Sporting Clays they sometimes advertise them!
  8. This is a great little shoot, used to be a regular when I lived in Hertfordshire. Many happy memories with John and Dave and Co.
  9. I've messed around with gun fit on various guns for what must be 30 years. It was not until I treated myself to a new gun at Brierley Guns and they made a brilliant job of fitting it for me that I realised I should have had my guns fitted by someone who knows what they are talking about years ago. However that's the difficult bit there are plenty that give that impression but very few that can actually do it. Another point is that if and when you have a gun fitted it can take a while, 6 - 8 weeks to get used to it, until you do yours scores may actually go down.
  10. Yes I will be coming on my own. Thanks, Stewart
  11. Had a Summit Ascent for about a year now, brilliant gun and seems easy to get on with. However it has been back for repair for non strike problem on second barrel, 2/3 times per 100. Looking forward to getting it back this week.
  12. They only have a few registered shoots a year, unfortunately, as they are really good, the targets being well thought out and in a lovely woodland setting. Their next 100 bird sporting now is 5th April, they do have FITASC on the 7th and 8th of March and are normally open for practice all week. It's my local ground but I think it's one of the best!
  13. Just seen on Facebook that the next sporting shoot at Grimsthorpe on 22nd Feb, has been cancelled due to adverse conditions at the ground. They have asked people to spread the word so that those intending to go are aware of the cancellation.
  14. Agreed good shoot, nice setting, as name suggests based in and around a wood. Targets are varied and in my opinion set at just the right level to keep most people happy, not too easy or too difficult. Decent clubhouse and good food. £25 for 100 birds over 13 stands is pitched about right as you have to score and button press. Very few breakdowns and staff on hand quickly to sort matters out if there is. All in all, thumbs up!
  15. Anyone after a spare or replacement trigger? I've just sold my Daytona so don't need the spare trigger. It's in excellent condition with a selector button for top/bottom barrel. Looking for £475, I believe they cost well over £1000 new. PM me if interested and I'll send a picture.
  16. Had the two best beaters days ever, standing on most of the drives. We were looked after really well on both shoots with a meal in the evening and even pasties at lunchtime on one. Total bag was 119 on one and 175 on the other. These are the only two days game shooting I do all year and it's like waiting for Christmas.
  17. I've had a 32" Summit Ascent for about a year now and they are excellent guns. I put a recoil reducer in mine as I wanted it a little heavier and it now comes in at about 9lbs and with one weight the balance seems just fine. The chokes are excellent, have even shot FITASC sporting with I/C and not felt underchoked. I went for the trap version as I like the chunkier forend but took up the option of the selective trigger at no extra cost.
  18. If it's mainly for clays I would go for the 30" which is roughly equivalent to a 32" over and under. The 28" would be better for pigeon shooting in the confines of a hide. I would have a look at both and see which feels best, it's down to personal choice!
  19. Great classic guns, I've got one which was made in 1959 and still going. Have shot thousands of pigeons with it. A few years ago it started to jam so bought a parts service kit from Brownells in the States and had my local gunsmith replace all the parts. I think the kit cost something like $15 and the gunsmith charged about £20 for putting them in. Has never missed a beat since. They tend to be short in the stock and low in the comb so I put a larger pad and comb raiser on mine.
  20. I have an old manual trap which you can have if of any use!
  21. Have a look to see if the pitch ie the angle of the recoil pad is the same to the horizontal line of the rib on both guns. If you try a kick eez comb raiser be warned they are very difficult to get off.

    Drive the Deal

Bought a Ford Focus through them several years ago and everything was excellent. Car delivered from main dealer by trailer. No problems and all and the price was right!
