waddy
I often think about doing the same thing (different profession though - for me it is a lot harder to just 'set up a construction' company) I wonder why I put in so much time and effort for so little reward to line someone else's pockets Perhaps mocing to a smaller organisation with greater reward and more personal drive from me would be better. Good luck with your venture though
Cranfield
The very best of luck LB. If you set out your plans well and keep to them, it will be a success.

Good luck with your venture though My sentiments exactly, although I did help run a small construction company for 5 years.. we did an exceptional job and had some fine workmen but getting the money out of Clients......... particularly the rich and famous was a nightmare..... Those who were titled were the worst! Now Im salaried again with the benefits of a Large Contractor can delegate a bit but still working too Bloody hard. I would recommend the smaller Private Company if you can find one. Good luck LB... ever done a head gasket on a Vitara 1.6 8 v. ? Fm. waddy
Been at Laing O'Rourke for 8 months now. Working for the Midlands Region, currently working away from home in Nottingham and not particularly enjoying it ! Before that I was working for Rok (was Llewellyn) in London. I just have no motivation to make money for somebody else at the moment. Where is my benefit ?!

Working for the Midlands Region, currently working away from home in Nottingham and not particularly enjoying it ! Before that I was working for Rok (was Llewellyn) in London. I just have no motivation to make money for somebody else at the moment. Where is my benefit ?! One of the major problems with the Construction Industry nationally im afraid. There is little or no parity with similar proffessionals in other industries. Ive got a Bsc and Masters degree. Msc in Construction Law and am a corporate member of the CIOB but if I held similar qualifications in another Industry at an equivilent position I guarantee I would be paid twice as much as I am now. We do have a profit share though being privately owned means we dont have a bunch of faceless shareholders to satisfy each year with a big fat dividend. I couldnt work for a "National" again as I would get really worked up knowing that 75% of the top staff and 50 % of the board in these companies are bloody useless, academically and practically. Take my advice, as you are young have a look in the market place for a small independant which has a good reputation. Join and grow with them. Good quality professionals are hard to come by at the moment. Are you a member of the CIOB or similar ? I thought Rok were very Pro- staff at least thats what their top dogs keep bleating about. FM. henry d
Good luck mate, things will be hard to start with but will in time get better! I tried it myself when I left the forces, self employed plasterer, just as the housing market slumped in late 80`s/early 90`s so nearly bankrupted me Now I only have 5yr11m&6days to go to retiral
waddy
I thought Rok were very Pro- staff at least thats what their top dogs keep bleating about. Oh don't get me wrong - the staff treatment was second to none at Rok - there were other issues which would be foolish to mention on a public forum, plus the fact that I was moving back to Cambridge anyway. It all ties in at the time. I hear what you are saying about a smaller firm with gorwth though. Definately an option. Our industry does lack good people, it is evident everywhere you look. I need to pull my finger out and start my RICS really. I worked my backside off for 5 years doing a day release degree whilst having a responsible position within a company - got a First Class Honours and thought I deserved a break before I started my chartership - haven't had the drive to get up and do it though ! If you are ever looking for a QS in the Cambridge area though

lurcherboy
Thanks for the support chaps it's much appreciated FM, your head gasket job is a very simple procedure, just remember to have the head planned and fit a new timing belt before you start the engine. Don't let a garage tell you differently, they will be trying to line the pockets :< Pavman he is performing brilliantly just like when I first got him. NTTF was spot on as Ben had slowly pushed the envelope and I never noticed until it was too late. Definitely back on track now though. Hope Astra performs similarly, she's a cracking little bitch, even if she was the first ever to make Ben turn away When we have cracked this are we going to Canada for lesson two LB
