Ishapoor
...was out on Saturday and had quite a few longish shots (nothing silly) where there was a distinct & significant puff of light breast feathers (and others) but the birds just didn't come down. Changed to 5's in the right barrel (only imp cyl) and promptly folded two long birds cleanly. Any thoughts? (I know, I know, shoot them in the head..!) Am out again this weekend and am wondering if I should just take 5's?
lurcherboy
In the head mate. I shoot with 6's and when I aint got them, 7.5's. I can miss and hit equally well with either cartridge. LB
dunganick
i use 6's for pigeon and what ever choke happens to be in the gun at the end of the day, at a sensible distance (40yards max) almost any combination can bring a woody down when the pattern is placed over it. as LB says, its more in your mind than anything. Ishapoor
Um, it's not in my mind infact! It's seeing great puffs of feathers coming out of the vital areas of four birds who didn't come down. Hence the question...
ROB REYNOLDS UK
iv been thinking of going over to fives for some time now ,well its them crows that got me thinking if its a bit more range why not go on to fives no harm done its what ever your happy with as its you thats doing the shooting there is a top pigeon shooter out there that uses no5 as he like the killing power out at distance ..so why not

ChrisNicholls
(shotgun info) Have a look here Ishapoor, loads of info for you to take in Jonno Is that an American site? the shot sizes quoted for No 6 and No 7 shot appear to be bigger than the English sizes. The sizes listed look to be about one size bigger than our shot sizes.
henry d
yes it is American and the shot size is not equivalent to ours, more so when you get to the big "lettered" shot.
ciaran
I use 6's for Pigeons, and for everything else that I would shoot apart from Ducks and Geese!!..
B525 LIGHT
5's are all I use from shipe to hares. Ive been saying so for years but they simply cope better on targets from all angles. Snipe even! Never shot a shipe!!
sitsinhedges
It's all very well having large shot sizes as long as you don't have big holes in the pattern.
COACH
5s for everything live for me, and at least 1/4 choke as it's only fair.
Alanl50
Gamebore Clear Pigeon 32g, 6 shot 1/4 choke over deeks, change to 1/2 choke roost shooting or flight lines if they are up a bit. Should nail them a treat. Regards Alan
EdSolomons
3/4 or full, whatever loose shells I have laying about (usually 28g 8 or 7). If I expect to shoot lots of 45 yard plus I'll chuck 5 or 4s at them

Blunderbuss
Pigeon carry a lot of small loose feathers compared to some other winged quarry. A single shot raking through the feathers without connecting with flesh, or perhaps lightly pricking the bird can dislodge a big cloud of them. This can give the visual impression of a hard hit bird even when its anything but. I suspect this may have been what the OP experienced. This can happen with 6s, 5s or AAA! 5s or 6s are fine with pigeon but I think the likelihood of finding a pigeon sized hole in your pattern on longer shots increases with 5s so I use 6s. chrispti
Used to use an Express 28g #5 for everything (decoying, roosting, rough, walked up etc etc) due to the price going up by £60 Iv had to start using something a bit cheaper, Gamebore Clear Pigeons. Much better kills with the 5s especially at range
Dekers
You can go on forever about cart type/size/weight, but everything that walks or flies and I shoot with a 12g shotgun (except fox/deer) gets a 5 or 6. It works for me, if something else works for you then fine!
