proTOM1
Nothing wrong with 7.5s for pigeons been using them for over a year now and have shot plenty and have to say my kill ratio is up from when i used 6s
Guest
I must admit i love my new found Eley First 7.5 cartridges however I'm tempted to buy 250 HB Pigeon cartridges and put them to the test!
Paul223
Totally agree we measured some rottweil 6s that were very similar shot as hull 7sa couple of years ago due to nearly the same discussion as this and express shot in 7.5 measured the same as express 8s so its a funny old subject. I have some at the mo which are 7.5, 2.4mm (thats what it says on the case), which can be anything from 6.5 to 7.5, depending where you look

UKPoacher
I was given about 400 Winchester 28g 7.5's and was a bit sceptical about using them on pigeons so I tried a few on closeish decoyed birds. They went fine, even took a few long shots and I've no qualms about using decent 7.5 cartridges in the right circumstances. I still buy 6's out of habit though. ollie
I have always used 7 1/2's 28g at decoyed pigeons. I will go up to 32g 7's for roost shooting. There was an argument about this about half a year ago and it went on for nearly 20 pages, lets hope this one doesn't .

Punt Gun
I am new so please forgive me, surely pigeon is pigeon why shoot with a heavier load for roost shooting to decoying pigeon. I'm not saying that 28gm cartridges wouldn't work because they probably would, it's just personal preference i guess, i like using heavier loads when roost shooting because i feel more confident, and a confident shooter is usually a good shooter! stevethevanman
I normally use...32g 6.5's, however some people I know and mark gilchrist I believe I saw on his video using 7.5 trap cartridges from rio?? I think pattern has alot to be said for it, mostly alot of misses are down to people suddenly changing to the trap cartridges, when used to slower 32g loads they suddenly miss infront perhaps with faster 28g loads. If you want trap performance with game hit then the gamebore black gold game looks very good , im told they are as good as people say they are Steve Edited July 19, 2010 by stevethevanman

Ferret Master
I am new so please forgive me, surely pigeon is pigeon why shoot with a heavier load for roost shooting to decoying pigeon. Decoyed pigeon are typically shot at closer range. Pigeon shot roost shooting are often shot at longer range and there may be branches getting in the way of the shot pattern. marlin vs
I normally use Fiocchi 32gr 7s on pigeon but the last day I ran out and all I had was Eley Olympic Trap cartridges in 8s back in the car so I chanced them and found that I shot the pigeon's just aswell with them, needless to say with the difference in price as soon as I get out again i'll give them another go,i'm the fella that wouldn't entertain anyone talking about using 28gr cartridges before this.Give them a try, they might suit you. Bluebarrels
28gm 7.5s work fine for me over decoys for pigeon and crows however if i was roost shooting i would go upto 32gm 6s,BB

wymberley
Excluding anyone using a smaller bore with, say, 21grams and shooting at sensible ranges, when considering the quality of target offered, I think it's a crying shame that for the sake of a few pence if we're not careful the words "sport" and "pigeon shooting" are going to become a contradiction in terms. Patently, the expression "give it lore" has already been confined to sporting history.

I change up to the heavier number 7's as the birds I shoot coming into roost can sometimes be higher and as someone already mentioned you can be shooing through branches. foggy11
I shoot black gold all the time now, pigeons and a lot of clays,,,, A shooting friend shoots whit gold xlr,, now theres a differance of about 200 ft per second at muzzle velocity, and i used to think the same, that down range velocity would be negligible, However shile shooting a Teal target a couple of week ago i was quite surprised... He shot first and when he fired there was a bang and a short pause , then clay broke, so i though oh well its quite far out , must need a bit more lead than i thought... When i got in the stand and shot, i just did my normal thing and the interesting point is that with my cartridges there was just bang and break with a much smaller gap... My point is that , there was a fair difference in time between his clay breaking and mine, not a lot , but enough to realise that even down range, and im talking about a 40 yard bird, there is quite a differance.

Well, roughly speaking it is a difference of 1 in 15 so it will make no practical difference at all to the lead required. Because energy is related to the velocity squared, it will make a bit more difference to the muzzle energy (approx 15%). My post certainly wasn't meant to imply that a faster cartridge is better. Just a list of available data for anyone who is interested.
b682
Do not the BASC recommend #6 shot now if the anti shooting or animal protection groups found out shooters were using 9s or 8s etc would they not call us all cruel !!!! Use the recommended cartridge and protect your shooting for the future - or save money and buy clay cartridges because saving money must be the reason behind not using #6 shot.
