silverhawk
I had somthing similar years ago I took a shot at a passing pigeon and it sounded like a cap gun going off. The fired shell didnt eject from my semi so i removed the fired shell and loaded another Then i had that feeling that i should take the barrel off and take alook inside. After inspecting the chamber i realised that the plastic wad had got stuck halfway in the barrel. I managed to push it out with a cut down branch It reaily **** me up because if i didnt take alook and i took the next shot ive never been able to figure out what caused it to do that as the rest of the cartridges fired ok. I think its something to dowith a mis formed wadd that expands beforeit leaves the barrel. shows why checking barrels is important if yournot sure it sounded right. stubby
glad it wasent more serious, but I'll use this as an example of something Ive noticed, on this an other forums, had this been a hatson escort, I think the replies would have been different, and the posts contents would be bought up again and again, every time someone asked what an escort was like as a gun, yet I doubt very much, this post will be pointed out, or re told when members ask about a silver pigeon it has to be noted, that across ALL GUNS, things can go wrong, but it dos'ent make them all bad Im sure I'll get alot of flax for this, so I'll retire to my aderson shelter
sitsinhedges
I hada similar thing happen to my 20g Silver Pigeon at a clay ground. Pulled the trigger only to get a muted bang and we actually saw the shot leave the barrel so looked inside and found a stuck wad. We decided the cartridge was probably loaded without any powder by the manufacturer and the payload was driven purely by the primer.
Oxon88
That seems like a hell of a lot of damage, if it was just a fibre wad stuck in the barrell? Are you sure someone didnt try a 28ga cartridge?! Edited September 25, 2010 by Oxon88
libs
That seems like a hell of a lot of damage, if it was just a fibre wad stuck in the barrell? Are you sure someone didnt try a 28ga cartridge?! Theres about 4 tonnes of pressure in the first 10" of pipe work. It wouldn't take much in the way of that to cause some serious bulge, mud/snow/wadding etc..
Redgum
Im not sure if a primer would have enough energy to get a wad stuck in the barrel like that but we have to remember that manufacturers can make mistakes, maybe a low powder charge is more like. We all have to be carefull all the time.
fortune82
That seems like a hell of a lot of damage, if it was just a fibre wad stuck in the barrell? Are you sure someone didnt try a 28ga cartridge?! No it isnt! I saw an old SXS years ago which had a section of barrel blown clean out, about the size of a 5 pence. That was casued by a plug of snow in the barrel after a fall.
Mungler
Any decent panel beater will knock that back into shape! Yeah that'll tap out; and then onto Gun Trader for a quick get rid Anyhows, glad all concerned still have their fingers and eyes. Name and shame the cartridge please. magman
There must be a reason for this ? tighter than half choke and steel perhaps
originalgeezer
"manufacturers can make mistakes" if they can, they shouldn't be in business as the making of a cartridge is a relatively simple process, and should be easily controlled by a quality build process - so no, if this can be attributed to the manufacture of the cartridge i would be asking for the monies back from them for the damage!!! According to the OP it was the cartridge at fault. ANY gun would have problems if fired with a wad stuck in the barrel. (However if it had been an Escort I've no doubt it would have exploded, killing everything within a half mile radius)
