Aid to India

I read the other day that we send circa £250mln pa to India as part of our International Aid programme. I was speaking to people here in India who say:

a) Why?

B) We don't need it.

c) What do we (India) spend it on?

d) We provide aid to poor countries (Bangladesh for example).

That's not to say they weren't grateful just that they had no idea and didn't see why.

Shocking eh?

I thought it was more like £800 million (it was a couple of years ago).

India has a space program.

We don't.

Doesn't seem to make sense.

Nial.

we give to india because although it is seen as an emerging wealth, with a plan to support a bid for the olympics and a no small matter of getting to the moon, it cant feed its kids,1/2 of whom still die before their 5th birthday, it is getting better at it but until it can redistribute its income and taxes better (ie get the better off to support their own country) they will always need international aid, perhaps not allowing the purchase of arms such as bae hawks etc or the removing of indian wealth to allow their rich to have big toys like premier league clubs!! could be a start of making them get their house in order.

Remember there are more people in poverty in India than in africa FACT

Having just just returned from a 3 week holiday in India and witnessed the hell of the Deli slums and the abject wealth of the fortune few i cannot believe that we are giving them any aid at all. They have so much wealth but are not distributing to their own people so why should we support the Indian government when they are not supporting their own people

Look I don't disagree with you wrt the poverty here. I see it day in, day out. My point is more that people here don't know that we give aid and don't think that we should. I bet you the aid is justified more by the diplomats that it justifies rather than the kids it saves. Cynical perhaps.

And you didn't pop in and say hello. How very rude :/

This is an open invite to anybody passing through Delhi. Let me know and I'll buy you a decent dinner.

That's not a bad deal! We give them some money and they give us half there population, I don't see the problem!!!!

Royal

UK population : 60 million.

India population : 1,200 million.

So half of the Indian population would make the UK population around 660 million, making the UK the second most populated country in the world.

Further to the point, a good chuck of Indian families were invited over after the independence of India, due to their connections with the British goverment.

The reason behind the 'Aid' is to keep friendly, and attempt to get first dibs on large industry contracts, making us money in the long run.

I'm not saying if it works, but that's the idea behind it.

Most of the aid we give to india is community aid providing things like schools and clean drinking water in poor areas because the Indian Government don't bother. They couldn't care less about them.

Did you know we are still giving Commonweath aid to Australia F F S?
