On arriving back at my car in Tescos car park (East leeds) I was approached by two people in white shirts, dary trousers, hi viz vests and clip boards (thought is was the police at first) and asked if the car was mine. Probably because its a dirty freelander with an equally dirty springer in the back.

i said "yes" and they asked me to remove the fuel filler cap as they wanted to test my fuel.

I said "shouldn't I be running it on red diesel?" and one of the men said

"no its illegal, is that what you are doing?"

I said "no I am only joking" which of course i was

he then sais "its a serious matter and not a joke. It costs the country hundreds of thousands of pounds a year"

anyway it was ok but I have never been asked this before has anyone else?

this really grinds my gears.... they always go for the easy target, there was a farmer in cornwall last week who was fined becuase he used his tractor & mower (running on red diesel) to cut the local football pitch, which he was doing for free.. Why dont these pillocks go and catch some real scum...

in answer to the ***** quote the police are both frightened and think that they have little chance of getting any prosecutions against ******.

Some years ago one of my outbuildings was being broken into and when i got outside i saw 2 ****** running off with chain saw, strimmer and hedge cutter. I recognised them as they used to drink in the village local. When I told the police they said that they couldn't do anything without another witness! 6 months later the police rang me to say that they had raided a council house in the village (it was rented by a family of ******) and it was full of stiolen garden equipment so could i come and identify mine.

I said no and if they had taken my advice 6 months ago maybe alot of stolen stuff might not have been stolen.

Police = waste of time for real crimes against the hard working general public!

Rant over

it is fairly rare in norfolk to be dipped , the portable sniffer shoved up ya pipe tells them what they need to know . no need to hunt for a second tank . they hunt in packs , customs and vosa . they prey on the farming and plant comunity and have openly said its easier to pick on these groups .

but you are correct guys , the caravan club members tend to be left alone .

Very common during gypsy fair week and the trotting season where I live.By the end of the gathering there are quite a few confiscated vehicles parked up behind the local cop shop. They once tried to dip an old Escort 75 van I had many years ago,but ti was fitted with an anti-syphon mechanism and they gave up eventually!Must have been near end of shift!

I work at a rec centre early morning cleaning. It's right next to a school which buses in kids from all over. The VOSA are often waiting in a pack to jump on the coaches as they arrive. I've no doubt that the justification is child safety, to which I have no objection of course, but I can't help feeling that it's an easy target.

I agree that it's law abiding who who get trampled on.

I was approached by two customs and excise officers who were waiting 50 yards out from a petrol station in a plain van.

They explained who they were, and asked if they could dip my tank, and as you don’t have much choice I let them carry on. I had bio in the tank and was topping up to run 50/50.

When they saw, the dark liquid in there bottle one of them asked me why I had red diesel in the tank and did I realize it was an offence to use red diesel blah blah…

I suggested he needed to get the **** out of his eyes and take a closer look.

The second one had a closer look and said it is not red, what is it, so I said I thought you were the experts….It is bio diesel!

Then the first one said do you have a receipt for the bio diesel? Well I had been keeping quite calm until then, and then conversation started to deteriorate into why I should have my bio receipts with me.

My answer was that they were with my accountant, and suggested they **** off and nick somebody running on red diesel if the could tell the difference..

A bit off topic but not too far off I hope, They are digging up the roads round here laying new gas mains. The dumper they are using has no number plate. Fairly new but clearly unregistered. Is that legal?

If the road has a physical barrier to prevent the public having access, yes it is legal!

I had my tank dipped years ago when i got pulled by vosa on the M11.I had to go on the weighbridge at Harlow due to driving a lorry and along with having an inspection by the vosa people-then C&E dipped the tank (found nothing wrong with either vehicle or my tacos though). Not a big deal and goes with the territory.

They do it around here on a fairly regular basis too. First it's tyre check week, then speed, then seatbelts, then tank dipping, then anything else easy for a skive week. But when tank dipping, they pull in any jeep / 4x4, petrol, diesel, doen't matter, they'll waste everyones time.

i must admit , when i worked for a differant firm and was borderline over wheight , my friend of 30 years and my brief advised me to have a hand held a4 poster to hand when vosa was targeting plant fitters in norwich . they can do nothing but obey to the clear sign of , " i will follow to nearest police station firearms onboard "

the wheigh bridge was more than 3 km away from full time manned police station so they never bothered .

it sounds a farce but all above bord as i normally had 12 bore in back of van and i wont stop for amber lights !
