BenBhoy
hi fellas. on way back this afternoon, i popped into a local butcher to see if they be interested in buying some of the fresh birds from me. the girl there said they could well be and is getting the boss to phone me tomorrow. she asked a few questions, one of which was what price i ask for for the birds. i was honest and said this was first time i'd sold any so didn't know the going rate. so just wondering what you guys charge per fresh (not frozen) bird to a butcher/game dealer? i was thinking about 20p-30p a bird??? cheers. sitsinhedges
30-40p seems to be about the going rate to game dealers.

Billy.
I sell to restaurants and in the past I've sold them at up to £1.50 a crown. You can't even cover your costs selling them at 30p each.

You can't even cover your costs selling them at 30p each. its better than nowt though! i eat the majority of what i shoot, cheap food and bloody tasty! EDIT: cheap IF they are only worth 30p! not cheap considering the amount i spend on cartridges trying to hit the damn things! Billy.
Are you selling the crowns frozen? Nice idea and good price if you can get it. I've sold them fresh and frozen at and around that price. In the same way people spend day after day knocking for permission, knocking for somewhere to sell pigeon is surprisingly successful If a restaurant questions why they're £1-1.50 a crown, just ask them how much the pigeon will go on the menu for Usually it's £12+ Edited August 25, 2011 by Billy. BenBhoy
yeah im sure your right billy. this was my first time of selling them though so pretty pleased. usually they just go in my own freezer, and with 25 carts setting me back 4.60, 3 quid will come in handy. will deffo look into pub/restaurant trade and crown them. do you ask to speak with chef or landlord/manager? Billy.
will deffo look into pub/restaurant trade and crown them. do you ask to speak with chef or landlord/manager? Chefs are usually mad keen on taking them. They just need to convince the boss to allow them to buy them in. If you are willing to, offer a sale or return to begin with. If they don't sell, they don't pay you. It works in harmony, as pigeon sells very well and they'll want more to keep selling.

Stratts
What a great idea that sale or return thingy is. We get 40p a bird frozen whole feathers n all here, but I'm gonna ring round and see if anyone wants the crowns
Cranfield
I think it depends how many you have to sell. If you are shooting a few, then crown them and hawk them round and see how you do, but if you are shooting 100's then you are not going to want to crown all of them, plus I imagine you will have a job shifting them. 30-40p a frozen bird in the feather, is the usual price I see. kippylawkid
Yes 30p per bird here too, as it was 30 years ago when I started selling them! Best I had was from a butcher that paid £1 a bird and he reckoned he was still making a packet at that. The crown tip is a good idea. turbo33
Usually with a post like this there are lots of replies saying you can't sell them unless in the feather or have various hygene certification. Am I missing something about supplying pubs/restaurants with the crowns or is PW becoming a happier more positive site
Whitebridges
Took today's birds in and got 35p each.
