dental charges

Went to the dentist today (yes 1st time for ages) had toothache for about 2 weeks and first chance to get to a dentist, had to pay £17 up front just to get the appointment, no probs as I had looked at the dental charge 3 tier payment for nhs treatment.

goes to dentist get examined, woman dentist says you need a tooth removing can't save it? looks ok to me just a small crack in it at the base, not badly decayed (yes I know I can't see all of it) BUT she says as I have a bridge fitted next to it she would have to remove the bridge as well and re cut and make another, as this would give the best cosmetic result,I said that's ok it will be covered at tier 3 of the payment schedule then £ 204? WRONG she says that does not cover bridge work for cosmetic purposes and it will cost me 2 grand!!

any way said thanks for the examination ( you have got your £17) I'm off elsewhere, problem is I cant seemingly get to see anyone! when they ask "are you private or NHS"

I can see a piece of string ,a bottle of balvenie and a door coming into play? anyway just what the **** gives with dentists in this country and the way they are financed? they where quick enough to get qualified through I presume the NHS but don't like to actually support it.

There was a documentary on the telly box a few months ago about rip off dentists saying they couldn't do the work on the NHS because their funding for NHS work had run out etc when in actual fact they are contractually obliged to do the work under the NHS pay scale. Shysters the lot of them.

I am private at dentist -- liked my dentist when it came out of NHS so stayed with them - I go every 6 months for scrape - polish and checkup - so far everything is OK except price - This last time was £76 - seriously thinking about trying to find a NHS dentist - only thing stopping me at moment is my dentist - She is stunning and when she leans over me I get this firm warm glow pressing on side of my head. - I am not sure now if it's worth the cost anymore.

It's not the dentist up here, it's the hygienist. Oh, the hygienist.

She told me to start flossing but I thought that if I did that I wouldn't need to go so often.

Dentists are like vets, when you have something done they just shake a bag of numbers, pick three at random and that's what your cost is!!

Bunch of rip-offs.

I was told last year I needed to see a consultant. The consultancy alone was going to be £300 and if treatment was needed could go up to £800 :o

DSPUK: At £76 a time I can think of places where you would get a lot more contact for your cash.

On the point of getting an NHS dentist, don't phone the dentist direct there is an NHS number you can ring and they have to find you one. I used it when I relocated and needed a tooth pulled got appointment the same week and then the dentist kept me on.

Thats because lots of dentists are failed vets!! :sly:

Next time you're in there just have a look at the list of people who get free dental treatment, thats why you me and the rest of the native male population get the royal screw job <_<

I can't get over what they charge. I dropped my life long dentist last time I went because he charged me something absolutely stupid for a five minute check up. Didn't even polish my teeth and wanted something like £80! It's a bloody joke!

I used to work for a couple who were both dentists. I mentioned the cost to one of them once as they were pretty open and decent people. Their reply was "yes, but the equipment costs are huge and it takes a long time to train".

Well ok, I'll accept that, but they also live in a £1m house and are both retired at 50. Something tells me the outgoings of the business are a fair bit lower than the income? :o

Click on dentist and tick the box about accepting new nhs patients to get a dentist in your area. :D

:hmm::hmm:

Did this and my old dentist who I had to leave as they no longer handle NHS patiets, came up as an option!

As a side, while I was abroad I broke a tooth and was in a lot of discomfort.

Went to a local dentist and had it ground down, refillied and sorted good as new.

Paid cash and went home happy!

Total bill was about £28.00 :good:

Just been myself - as above £17 for a 2-3 minute check and £47.00 to come (or it may be £30 left to pay?) for a filling to be redone.

Not knocking the service but I wish someone had told me years ago about this scam - I'd have spent the extra year or two at Uni and gone down that route!! The Polish chap I used to see woould start appointments at 7.30 and opened until 6.00pm but he's left now and its back to 9-5 so can't avoid taking time off work!

I am with Denplan. £8 per month and everything is covered. For me, I go twice per year, get full inspection, scrape polish etc, and peice of mind. + great set of teeth :D

Price is fixed and depends on the condition of your teeth at the start, so best to get in sooner rather than later.
