Mixed bag with Mark Robson

Booked a day with Mark for a rough walked up day with a possible chance of grouse, but it was made clear prior that they were not a shoe in for getting any but the chance of being lucky enough to get one was enough.Drove down with Shaun and the old fella on Sunday and stayed the night at a cracking hotel, complete with sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool and met Tam at 9am on Maonday. The weather was fine in the morning and Marks old fella,Jeff, joined us at the hotel and led the way to the keepers hoose which was only a 5 minute drive away. There we met a finer bunch you wouldnt get who turned out to be beaters and dogs which we were not expecting. We all loaded up and headed out for a start on the ducks. Not going to go through the whole drives, and unfortunately forgot batteries for the camera for pics, but the day consisted of duck, pheasant, partridge, snipe, pheasant and pheasant drives with a couple of hours of walked up grouse. The highlight would have to be the grouse, where we headed up this hill with the motors and set a line at the top.The view was unbelievable and the weather turned nasty with some driving rain but it didnt detract from the walk at all.We hadnt gone very far when a shot or two came from the top of the line, and word came doon that Shaun had shot his first grouse which was great news. The first leg of the walk produced a few coveys but nothing close to most of us but to see them rocketing away from a standstill has to be seen to be believed. The next leg saw us spin and cover the lower half and Shaun seemed to be getting the best of it with a few shots from his direction so i was just starting to think the jammy ******* is not getting next year when Rab stopped not 10 yards in front, turned inwind and started wagging his tail.I adjusted ma feet in case it was a bird when it erupted from the heather and with all the time in the world i mounted the gun.It was already dead in the air before i pulled the trigger in my heed, but when i pulled there was a click and then a hash to get the second barrel selected but by the time i pulled he was well out and the chance was gone.Ive surely annoyed the big man up top as the only misfire all day was on the first grouse ive ever been away to shoot at.I was absolutely gutted and thought my chance had gone but nay long after another one presented and the shot was on but he glided about 100ish yards in front and i was hoping he would be deed.We marked him and went up with the dogs and it surprised me and flushed again and headed downhill and downwind. The speed they make in a short time is uncanny, and i clean missed the first shot but luckily decked her with the second.Thats the first grouse i have ever shot and probably the best moment for many a year.We carried on with the walk with everyone getting a few shots at birds but we didnt manage to pick anymore. It would have been outstanding if we had all got one but hopefully the old fella and Tam if we get to go next year will both get one.Superb bag, with top folks and a huge thanks to Mark,Cameron,Scott,George and also a couple of others whos names i canny mind.A couple of pics from the hill and one of the bag.If we are lucky enough to get a day or two next year ill mind the batteries.

Sounds like you had a great day mate! With views like that and good company what more could a man ask for?

Great write up, a pleasure to read! :good:

It was a superb day Frenchie and the company as stated couldnt have been better.Well, then again,if Katy Perry had turned up to beat it might, just might, have enhanced the day.Cheers.

I love days like that, brilliant write up, well done.

Ta Aled.

Nice write up and the grouse moments sound really special. :good:

There is no doubt that Mark Robson is the "real deal".

Cheers a lot fella.

Words dont do the grouse moment justice and im smiling writing this still just thinking aboot it.

As for Mark,i have only met and chatted a couple of times before and he seems, nope,he IS a very genuine guy that loves what he does.I have only paid for shooting once before and it was a top day,but i wouldnt dream of using any guides up this way that i know because they are, well you know where im going. The day was worth every penny and more and the only one left on the to do list for now is the Sika stag.
