These wilderness types start camp fires with a 9 volt PP3 battery and some wirewool.

Yep seen it done on a health & safety video

Asked my mate what he would have done IF I had shot myself. Ans- Laugh, thought so :P:D:)

Now sorting out a sealed battery cover :yes:

Lithium ion / polymer cell, no doubt about it.

Another hobby of mine is RC planes / helis. We use lithium polymer cells a lot, and I have many a horror story I could recount. Unlikely anyone here would be using such cells for this hobby really though you could very easily. They are light and have extremly high energy density. Most of you will have a single 600-1000mah cell in your mobile phone!

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) and Nicads will heat up and possibly cause a fire, but will seldom explode. Lithium packs (lipo's) have a weak link in the pack to stop a short causing a fire - but it can still happen (mostly when charging or over discharging).

If you are using them and don't know what the dangers are, check out this little experiment we did. The vid explains whats going on, but it was taken on a couple of camera phones so you can't actually see the battery. The cell was a single lipo 1200mah - most would come in a pack of 3 or more of these little fellas.

NOTE: some strong language in the vid right at the end (me)

I've often thought my perfect day out would be me, a box of ferrets, lurcher and my beretta with my FF9 and wildthing under my other arm. Sat on a nice slope some place and just enjoying my two favourite hobbies together.

To make this day more heterosexually acceptable it would also include being repeatedly fellated by the popular singing outfit girls aloud, whilst enjoying my other two favourite hobbies

3 and a bit, nothing good on telly then...

Me three... A 3 cell lipo makes for a great light weight 12v source but you need the right charger

Shame on you MM, let sleeping topics lie!

bloody hell

keep your shirts on.

Firstly just glad you are ok, I am sure it freaked you out!

Given a basic understanding of physics I would have said you would have to be extremely unlucky to get seriously hurt or killed by this happening. In order for a rifle round to gain its lethal kinetic energy the combustion of the shell needs to be tightly constrained, by a lot more than just the casing, in order for the pressure to build with only one way of release (via the barrel).

When the shell went off the build up of pressure in the casing was far too much for it since it wasn't in the barrel so it gave up. There would have been some energy imparted on the round but it would not have much energy, certainly not enough to kill or wound someone. High pressure will always take the path of least resistance to dissipate (much like electrical potential) and in this case the casing was weak and failed, the majority of the energy dissapating that way rather than sending the round off at high velocity.

I would think you might have gotten a minor flesh wound if you were unlucky, certainly some mild powder burns if it was close to skin.

Not trying to be a smartarse, just sharing my view..

Still, not what you want to happen anywhere near the family jewels mate! Lessons here for us all I think...

Agreed. Very glad that you are ok, and not for one minute would I like to try this to prove a fact. That said....

I don't if anyone see Myth Buster on Discovery a few weeks back. They were trying to bust the Myth that chucking bullets on the camp fire will kill you. They put on everything from a 17HMR round to a 50 Cal round on the fire, then surrounded the fire with wood planks. Not one bullet had enough energy to kill you. You would have been wounded by a few casing, but you would "probably" would not have died.

But, like i said, I would not have liked to have been in your situation. Would have scared the hell out of me.

Crikey this is a plast from the past. That night we were on a farm at the top of Southowarm near Halifax. I had a Cluson Lamp on the 17 and the battery in the DPM smock jacket. They have thin pocket linings and the battery was right next to my jacobs

I heard a load crack and then felt a very sharp burning sensation in my groin. I honest thought I have been shot then dropped my pants to see why I was in such pain. Mick took his lamp off his scope and we had a closer examination to see if my tackle was still intact

I did have a small powder burn on my skin
