I am very pleased with the shooting school which I frequent.

The owner took me for a 1 hour lesson today, my 4th.

He said, before I have more lessons it would benefit me to go around his numerous traps having a friend operate them for me while I shoot, I agree.

1 hours usage is £35.00 + clays at 10p each plus cartridges at £5.00 box but you can take your own cartridges.

Will give it a whirl next week.

BTW, how much is a box of clays??????????????

I cannot agree that it is more important to shoot with technique than miss without.

I was a keen golfer when I was younger and had an unconventional swing, even though I had a low single handicap.I was told it was how many, not how, that was important.

I can draw lots of parallels with golf and shooting. My golf swing was unconventional but I could repeat it and that`s the same for shooting, gun mount is extremely important, if you mount the gun in the same place and swing in the same manner you will consistently hit targets. This wont come overnight as you need to practise to achieve this.

I would recommend a few lessons with a good coach to get a value of what your trying to achieve but after that it`s up to you to develop your own technique. I was 46 before I took up shooting but within 10 years I was AA in sporting, albeit at the bottom end of the scale, and have maintained that into my mid sixties.Have lessons but be confident enough to develop your own style and shoot how it suits you, we`re not all the same high , weight, strength etc , don`t be a clone it might not suit you.

I think the point about shooting with technique was a good one . As a youngster I was good at snooker, the only thing I have ever been good at. I was lucky to get some free coaching, the guy that coached me got me into the british juniors under 16 and under 19's some 30 years ago. At that time Alex Higgins and Steve Davies were head to head, Alex had a style all of his own. Steve Davies was better than text book. At their peak there was nothing between them, but for most of us the text book style would have got most of us better results.

Thats the oddest charging structure i have ever heard of, most are 20-35p per clay but all allow them to shoot as fast or as slow as you wish! £35 an hour and 10p a clay is odd and seems to get best value for the shooter to shoot more quickly.....

Clays are about 6p each in bulk i think http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=5910 Cartridges are £150 per 1000 for budget carts in bulk, Get your self 1000 from a local RFD and save a few £

Parallels with golf arent great, you can see when you hook or slice a golf ball and when it lands somewhere other than you planned, with shot it hits the target or misses when it misses how do you know if you were infront, behind, above or below? Standard answer is always behind and give it more lead.... but what if you were spot on but there was a hole in the pattern?

I am also sceptical of people who say they can see the shot in flight...

A couple of weeks ago i shot a 60+ yard edge on crosser off a high tower of 10 shots had 2 breaks, was with coach who said I saw you put the gun in the right place 4 times and only had 2 breaks, he then had a go and hit it once from 5/6 I was quite happy!

Rightly so, we chuck them in the river in Essex. If they survive they are witches.

EDIT: That and a scepticism of men that offer to "push your stool in for you".

If you think about what you're doing, you could score 100% shooting one handed and scratching your balls with the other hand.

Huzzah! free shooting tips, AAA Class beckons..... :sly:

If you REALLY REALLY concentrate you could do it without falling down :D .............well maybe :P

I'm so dissapointed I wasn't there

most dont do enough thinking.

I think people need to simplify their thinking!! Think about the clays flight, where to pick it up n where u want to "kill" it, dont over think daft ideas like have i got right choke in, am i best using the blue coloured cartridge or the red one, have i got he right shoes on etc!! Just get out there and practise and enjoy yourself!!

Use a coach to get your basic's right. The gun's right, the fit's right.

Start on easy targets, get your confidence going.

Practice, practice, practice. On your own or very small group.

If you start listening to the nice folk you shoot with you can easily get very poor advice. They mean well but can ruin your progress.

Once you feel you've made a bit of headway go back to your coach, on to the next phase.

Be patient, it can take years. But some are natural shots.

My grandfather started me shooting when I was 6 and my father took me when I was 9. I'm now 51 and it doesn't get any easier!

You can read books, go on the net, trawl through gun shops, dribble over magazine racks (the GOOD kind) and much more besides but as Whitebridges says you'll never get better experience than practicing. Being prepared to miss in order to learn how to hitt is the order of the day and you'll enjoy feeling that it's all coming together gradually. Even Formula One drivers still stall their cars and you can see how much practice they do!

Nowadays (and I'm STILL no good) I can tell nine times out of ten at the point of firing whether it's going to be bits :D or a frisbee flight into the diatance

Even when you can't get shooting stand in your home (curtains dawn if you're easily embarrassed) and dry mount. Once you know your gun you've taken a big step. Good luck and please keep us posted how you're getting on :good:

and you need a towel on your skeet vest. cant go wrong then

The last time I tried that I kept standing on the damn thing. I got a telling off when I arrived home, apparently I'd used her best bath towel and she wasn't happy with the muddy footprint pattern on it

What percentage point gains could I expect if I had one of those leather tabs on my shoe for resting my gun?

You would have to ask, and then make another decision, which shoe? do I require 2 to make sure I am equally balanced?

And then you have the problem of, should the thing on the shoe match the slip, skeet vest etc? Decisions, decisions.
