Iggy
Hi all, I shot a new gun at the weekend so opted to use Comp X 21g (7.5 plastic) in case my mount was off (ooh missus!). Anyhow, I’d forgotten just how nice these are to shoot compared to my usual 28’s and to be honest my scores were no different than usual, in fact they were slightly better and (to me) the breaks looked very similar overall. I’m not going to drone on about 21g shell’s as its been done to death, but I have been thinking about trying some 24g as a sort of half way house – hopefully gaining the benefit of less recoil and fatigue but with only a few (30-40) pellets less than a 28g shell. The 24g options I’ve been able to find so far are Hull Intercomps, and RC2 – with the RC2’s about £160/1000 and the Intercomps around £165/1000 - so not much in it. I think Lyalvale Express also do a 24g cartridge but they seem to be around £180/1000?? Has anyone got any experience of different 24g cartridges they have used? I’m not particularly sensitive to recoil but like most people I guess, I seem to shoot better the less there is. Thanks all, Iggy.
Bloke
When I started back shooting, the club only used Eley first 24/9 for skeet and 24/7.5 for everything else, seemed ok to me for most things. Must admit I usually use 21/7.5 for nearly all clays now, with little reduction in breaks (obviously for smaller clay grounds, without some of the ridiculously high/long birds). ChrisAsh
I use gambore White Gold Pro Steel 24 gram No9's and find them great for clays if allowed Plastic, no kick to speak of and great patterns
Amexian
I use either Gamebore XLR or Gamebore Blue Diamond. Both are excellent - well priced and really comfortable to use.
EdSolomons
Any cheap ones! Comp x are pretty cheap and soft too
PhilR
Eley VIP are top of the range and are excellent. There's the Eley Blues which are cheaper and a good cartridge too.

The 24g Eley VIPs are fantastic The Hull Sovereign 24g are also very good - very soft on recoil Edited April 4, 2012 by paulos
coyotemaster
I can only say that I don't feel handicapped at all shooting 21-24 gram loads. With the price of lead as it is and the lessening of recoil it is a win, win. I am loading 350grain loads and get 500 per bag of shot. They seem to kill as well as anything else and are easy shooting.
ruddyhellfire
I have been using express hv 24g for a while now and i must say i like them a lot. I had some top scores lately at my local ground but i must admit none of the stands are too far out. I get good brakes with them better than some of the guys using 28g anyway. BigG
I use pro fiber or pro one depending on shoot requirements. Often use the fiber even when I can use plas. Have tried many types, always come back to them. Agree with the anything cheep, but the pro's instill confidence (for me). G
figgy
Victory challenger 2 in 24 gram are very good. So good in fact I thought the 28G would be better, big mistake, fast but kick like a mule, stick to 24 and one of the best shells I have used. seeker
Another nice thing about the Victorys is they have also #8 shot option in the 21 & 24g loads .... when they've got them. I thought the 28g was st least a 2 mule load?
BlaserF3
I have shot 24gm Express High Velocity for a few years now, don't let the name name fool you, the recoil level is quite soft. The fibre version are just as good to shoot also.
Iggy
Thanks very much indeed for all the tips and advice chaps, much appreciated I've found a local supplier who sells Lyalvale so I picked up a slab of 24g Express HV shells today in 7.5 - I would have prefered 8's but I'll give these a whirl and if I like them look at getting some more. I'll let you know how I get on with them and thanks again to all.

Dominicrobed
I have been using gamebors blue diamond 24g and love them , I bought a slab of eley first 28g last sat as they were on offer BIG mistake I hate them the recoil sucks. I now cant wait to use them up and get back to the blue diamonds.
SakoQuad
I bought a slab of eley first 28g last sat as they were on offer BIG mistake I hate them the recoil sucks. NASTY cartridge in my view as well. Harsh and dirty too, fortunately I only bought a couple of boxes to try them out and was so glad I hadn't been tempted to buy a slab! Tomski1000
Im in the 21g Comp x camp, Fantastic little cartridge +1 don't think i'm accurate enough on the really long birds to blame the cartridges yet
Iggy
Thanks for the continued input, much appreciated I tried a few Express HV 24g at the weekend and they seemd ok, a bit harder recoiling than the Comp X 21g as you would expect and they seemed hard hitting and clean enough. Only strange thing I noticed about them was the heads seemed to leave brass coloured marks on the breech face? They wiped off with some Napier when I cleaned the gun, but Ive never come across this before On balance though, I cant see that I did any better/worse with them than the 21g Comp X to be honest....although I did shoot like a big girls blouse at the weekend so possibly not the best time to judge

matone
I`ve found Hull Intercomps to be very good,Pro Fibre are even better, very smooth, give very good breaks, work well with open choked guns. I`ve used a fair few Gamebore XLR which are not as consistant, they are light on recoil tho`.
