poontang
China would lose a full scale conventional war against the US very quickly and very badly. They've got several decades of modernization left before they're even in the same league. Exactly my point.
Gimlet
Remember, civilisation sits on a knife edge... it WILL collapse at some point, we may now be starting to see the tipping point, and yes, I do think we could well see the collapse of civilisation (as we know it) in our life times!! Wishful thinking, though I hope you're right. Mankind is a plague and 7 billion people devouring the Earth is an unparalelled catastrophe, but I think its going to get far worse before it gets better. Possibly another one or two centuries. In theory the present age could turn out to be the worst time in human history to be alive. Though all this cheerful speculation is wandering slightly from the subject of a yesteryear socialist winning temporary Presidential office in France. They've got several decades of modernization left before they're even in the same league. That assumes that the Yanks would use nukes. The Korean conflict showed that masses of expendable troops could overcome conventional high technological weaponry.

spanj
Let it collapse. If it takes the UK as it currently composed with it then so be it. The 'European social model', to which Britain is a deluded subscriber, is a house of cards, as fraudulent, bankrupt and preposterous as Soviet Marxism, indeed it was dealt from the same pack. Like the Soviet Union, the EU is modern Tower of Babel. Let it fall. Its not the collapse of supranational political vanity projects that is the disaster- they always collapse- its the length of time they're allowed to stand and the number of people who are conned into living in them that is the tragedy. The sooner the EU goes the fewer people will be hurt when gravity reasserts itself. I doubt there will be war. No one has the guts, the guns or the money. countries always have money for war dont you find ........
spanj
I doubt this will be enough to start a world war... local in-fighting perhaps and the odd civil conflict in countries that our enlightened society would suggest had passed the point where civil conflict was possible... This is just the Entree... If there was to be another global conflict, it would no doubt be fought over control of dwindling resources... in particular oil and water... however, finance will no doubt be the agenda item that sets the tone and starts the downward spiral of rhetoric and politic... they will fail at some future point and then...... Let's hope not, ehh! doesn't really bear thinking about.. But just to finish my little prediction off... the next conflict to engulf the entire globe will be between the USA and China... when the US financial system goes tits up (and it will!) and China realises it isn't going to get it's money back, it will be a good excuse for them to strike the first blow! Remember, civilisation sits on a knife edge... it WILL collapse at some point, we may now be starting to see the tipping point, and yes, I do think we could well see the collapse of civilisation (as we know it) in our life times!! you're a bundle of laughs today....... tell me, if you believe civilisation is going to collapse why have you bothered subscribing to basc ??? AVB
The markets are pretty calm and we are normally the first to panic and run around like headless chickens. Currencies are a bit busier but nothing drastic. The Euro hasn't collapsed yet.

AVB
I was listening to Warren Buffet tonight and he had this to say on the situation: 1) Europe will still be around - 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. However long it takes to sort itself out it still has a lot to offer 2) The US and the UK sorted their problems out starting in 2008 - recapitalised the banks and started cutting spending. They can also issue debt in their own currency. 3) What Euro countries lack is the ability to devalue their currency and so effectively impose austerity measure by stealth as imports then cost more. 4) It will be a bumpy journey but it isn't end of the world as we know it. and finally Never react (buy or sell) to headlines. There. Warren said it will be OK ps -for those of you who don't know Warren Buffet is CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, a US conglomerate, one of the most highly respected leaders and investor. Third richest man in the world. He is referred to as the "Sage of Omaha"

Fisherman Mike
This is bad news all around. We may be seeing another world war in the making if things keep going south. I hate to say it but thats probably what we need. reduce the Global population somewhat and rebuild the economy thereafter. History illustrates that after every Military conflict GB has enjoyed sustained periods of growth and prosperity. Problem is the Tories have dismantled the Armed Forces, The Construction Industry, The Infrastucture networks, The Welfare state and the The National Health service and we wouldnt have any way of fighting any war, looking after the casualties, or rebuilding thereafter. I suppose we could send one or two of our aging submarine fleet into the channel and fool them into thinking they were a couple of trafalgar class Nuke carriers. Not only that with the State of Public transport Mr Brown would probably not get an 8.21 in to town anymore...and he wouldnt be home in time ready with his gun....
