henry d
Vitara 2ltr diesel (120K mileage) on a run at 50-60 mph=37+mpg
MC
I have a Discovery TDi and it doesn't seem to matter whether you thrash it or drive it sensibly, towing or not it does 30MPG. 4 grand would get you a reasonble one. Wookie
My mate swore blind he used to get 35mpg out of his Landy 90 TDi, but I reckon he was lying... Apparently you can get that sort of mileage with the right tyres and an engine transplant to something more sensible. Wookie
Cranfield
Buy a second hand Landrover and the cost of the fuel will be the smallest of your economical considerations. Enter lurcherboy, stage left.
Wookie
I'd agree with that! My mate's C plate 90 cost him a small fortune to put right after he paid 1300 for it. Then, when he replaced the blowing exhaust, he noticed that the valve stem seals needed replaceing, so the head had to come off... All told, he needed: Chassis welding, new doors, new rear tub, canvas tilt, that bit of metal at the front the ragtop needs to sit on, hoops for the tilt, new bonnet (twice, the second one got dented). That's not a complete list and it's also not including the money he spent on tools for it.
JRDS
I have an R Plate 300TDI Discovery, great motor and no reliability problems to date. Last fill 32.4MPG, motor before was a 3.0V6 4Runner that did about 22MPG.

Whitebridges
Toyota Rav4. OK a bit girlie I know. Tows my boat, drive it on the beach where it gets salt water in the wheels .Does 40 to the galllon (diesel) and never ever had anything gone wrong with it. Coming up for 5 years old and the light bulbs haven't even flickered.Brilliant motor. Forget a Landy unless you are an enthusiast and have a bottonless pit of cash and a pit stop on the end of your house.

If you wear trainers and drive sensible you can achieve this. However, if you wear boots you can drop to 20 mpg, I know this for a fact I entered on the right Cranfield. Mungler
Buy Jap and buy as later model as possible. Did anyone catch Top Gear a couple of weeks back they said that Honda had not had a single reported failure of their V-Tec engine. There's something to losing a war and getting your infra structure replaced - Jap and German are the cars to have.
