utectok
Ok so I put a deposit on a new gun £250 and went on my anual week fishing holiday with the boys which was excellent. Wife texted that she was going to France to see her sister next month ok unusual but fine says I. I come home and wife says I have been opening ur post in case something important came (never done that before weird) she found a receipt for the gun deposit and went mental what about new garage holidays next year etc etc (gun was £1400). Anyway I says I was going to part ex my old gun so it's not really £1400 anyway it's my money and the familly always gets what they want..... Blimey bit ****** off she even opened the post and said I never ask you what you spend on etc etc plus I don't ask if I can buy a new gun because you always say no so what's the point??? Ah well suppose I'd better try and get my deposit back now Edited September 2, 2012 by utectok

Lord Geordie
If the family get what they want then put your foot down. How long has it been since you treated yourself? It's not ALL about everyone else. If the bills are getting paid and there is food on the table and clothes on your backs and you can afford it even over a few month then there is nowt wrong with treating yourself. Opening your mail and going abroad with her friends? Sod that! The mail sounds like she don't trust you and is snooping for letters from other women If she can waste money to go on hol.with her friends I think she has a cheek to moan about you spending money on a treat for you. Andy135
Ok, but where's the trust from her that he can budget for the family and still get a gun if he wants. She only went mental because she thinks she & the family will lose out on something (holiday, garage etc etc) in the future if he buys this gun. Utectok is a grown adult and he can manage his finances appropriately. Lets assume that getting a new gun doesn't impact the family negatively, in which case she has no reason to squawk. Sounds like she just wants to control him. @Utectok, if you give in now, you may as well give her your bank cards too. And you can hand in your man card as you leave. Man up and make a stand. utectok
I think the I'm going to France is a you went fishing for a week so I'm going to France (which is fine by me she can pay for it though!). I go fishing every year though for a week in rainy scotland and she has never bothered about it before. I'm pretty sure I can afford the garage anyway and the gun was part funded by a gift to me from my Mum. I always pay all the bills put twice what she does into the housekeeping account buy the girls Christmas and birthday presents pay for her car morgage etc...... But not sure I would enjoy the gun now it's caused so much trouble ...

utectok
I think part of the problem is she doesn't know what guns cost...... I always say they aren't that dear I wish id said the are then the shock of seeing a £1400 ticket would have been less

Catweazle
I like to keep it all out in the open, and explain that buying a quality shotgun isn't the same as spending money on fashion clothes or shoes - she'll get pennies back, if anything, on her friday night glam gear but you'll get a lot back on a quality gun. parapilot
Ha, all my guns were £100 . I normally put a bit away in the gun safe every week where she can't go or see. Soon mounts up then you can go buy another gun without her noticing. Best was my browning, came in a hard case, when I took it into the house she said "what you bought a stupid briefcase for, you got slips to keep your guns in"!! I said it was only £20 bargain, and took it up to the safe asap. Thank god she didn't open the 'stupid briefcase' and see the £1500 gun!!! hahaha. All women are the same. She will go and spend £200 in river island that's fine, if I spend 200 in a gun shop I get the cold shoulder for a couple of days!
hillmouse
We do "Wife receipts". How much will she let you spend?? Well thats what your receipt will say. Leave it where she will find it and hide the real one well. PS. Place a written valuation in the safe because if you die and she sells them for what you said you paid............................................................. bruno22rf
Sorry to be a harbinger of doom but if your relationship is at a stage where she goes away for a week just because you did-you have more serious problems than her moaning about your new gun.If I were you I would buy the gun and be open about it-she can like it or lump it-life is not a dress rehearsel so if you want something and can afford it then get it-tommorow might never come. Amazed
I have kept my "gun fund" and family money seperate so my mrs doesn't complain as much lol. If I do any overtime or sell a gun then that can go into the fund but this covers ammo aswell. It's a good arangment as I don't get carried away and spend money we don't have on something we don't need Have been known to launder the odd bob or too tho he he. Robl
I’m not sure how much of this thread is a wind up and how much is serious. If it’s a wind up then there are some excellent dry senses of humour around here. If it’s real, then there’s some serious dysfunctionality, and some people really need to take stock of their lives. If you really dislike and distrust the wife then just get a divorce and move on. If your lives are so separate that you don’t spend quality time together, don’t enjoy each other’s hobbies and don’t trust each other with money then what’s the point in staying together. Seriously, if it’s not fun, why do it? Some bizarre sense of loyalty to someone you don’t even like anymore? Is it just habit? Just staying together for the sake of the kids? Please Note - Robl is not qualified to give advice on life altering decisions. If you leave your wife or she leaves you robl is in no way liable. Your house may be at risk if you get divorced or set fire to it.

My missus tends to spend any birthday or Xmas money on exactly that - jewellery (not gold, which might have a future value), clothes... Basically tat. She always wonders how I manage to have money to buy shooting bits I reckon I've recycled the same £1000 many times over since I started shooting again a few years back
Catweazle
Sounds as if she is in need of some serious training . It's quite easy, just give her a chocolate button when she does something good, and a squirt of water in the face when she does wrong. Some people use electric shock collars, but this should really only be used for the worst behaviour.

But, it's always a useful thing to point out. It obviously works, I just bought a Beretta Gold E and when she saw me ogling a nice German SxS yesterday she asked if I was going to buy it.
