MG6065
Hi all, I'm the process of getting a 22lr granted, could you please advise me on what to be looking at buying? I've got a budget of £500 and for this I want the rifle, sound mod and scope, it's going to be for nailing some rabbits on the farm, cheers guys
apache
TBH a nice CZ, SAK mod and something like a Hawke/AGS/MTC scope will see you well. You can have a nice set-up for your budget all brand new. I bought wood stock, but if was buying again would go plastic. Shorter barrel an advantage if shooting from a vehicle. MG6065
Cheers mate, what magnification scope would you say? Why plastic over wood?
apache
Mine gets knocked about in the car, onto passenger seat, out window etc. Personally 9X is as big as you need to go with a .22 in my opinion. I have a 3-9X42. Usually leave it on 6X
kent
CZ 452 16" varmint (wood stock) with moderator, get it secondhand 6x42 s+Bender hungarian second hand should come into this budjet. Its gonna get knocked about a bit working about the farm and there are plenty about. I wouldn't have a plasic stock on any of my guns, true composite yes plasic no. About 2-250 for the gun and 250-300 scope. You could buy new with your budjet though your scope wont always last the course and you will end up buying again. A working .22 rimfire wont be any more effective for higher magnifications levels
MG6065
The CZ's seem very popular! Would you definitely go down the bolt action route rather than semi for the rabbits? I want something that is decent and is going to last me a while, I'm planning on fitting a bipod to it aswel
Dunkield
Follow the advice. Get a CZ, I would go for the plastic stock and 16" barrel - blue or nickel barrel is up to you. Stick a SAK mod on the end and away you go. IMO 7x is the perfect magnification for a .22 rimfire, so either get a variable say 3-9 or look out for a second hand Meopta 7x50
bedwards1966
As said CZ's are great. Scope magnification is a matter of preference, I'd opt for a 3-12 - though 3-9 is probably enough for most (I've got poor eyes!). 16" barrel, there is no need for a longer barrel on a .22lr, they just become cumbersome. Stock material is a matter of preference. I personally like wood, but there is nothing wrong with plastic - it's easier to clean and better to knock around, plus it doesn't swell when damp. For rabbit shooting I'd go for a bolt action every time. Quieter, more accurate and far easier to use safely, and with practice plenty fast enough for a second shot in a hurry. Dekers
This one goes round and round, each to their own and for their own reasons! For general farm work I see no need for a Varmint barrel or an expensive scope. I have plastic and composite and wood stocks on my rifles and I have to admit that whilst I do like the wood it is not always the best for an individual rifles job. Scope wise on my rimfires, I always use budget scopes and have never missed or refused a shot because of the price of the scope, neither have any of mine ever fallen apart. All my rifles get used, and the rimfires get a lot of use in many different environments. My 452 Silhouette and Magtech 7022 both have "plastic" stocks, light barrels, cheap scopes and SAK mods and work just fine! Thunderbird
I'm looking at a 22lr myself soon and someone recommended an older BRNO model 2e for knockabout farm work. They seem to be able to be got for a reasonable outlay.

martyn2233
Better with a nail gun than a 22lr if you want to nail them mate only joking Any thing cz will do
ajm1979
As already said go for Cz, I have a cz452 plastic stock 16 inch barrell with Sak Mod and a cheapish hawke scope think its 4-9 x 50 or similar zero has never moved in 18 months, gets chucked in and out the jeep with no worries about marking the wood, any longer than 16inch barrell is a pain as I have found with my Sako quad, trying to get a 20inch barrell out the window quickly is a problem looking for someone to chop it down to 16inch. Unless ofcourse you know different? Gun: CZ Scope: Try and find a Meopta Moderator: SAK Enjoy! jam1e
As already said. CZ with plastic stock, 16" barrel, sak mod and Hawke scope. Something around a 3-9X50. I've just had my fac arrive today and thats exactly what set-up i'll be looking for with my .22 and .17 rimfires.
arjimlad
I've been very happy with a CZ Style for more than 5 years now. The synthetic stock has been a boon on muddy evenings out. SAK moderator and a Hawke 6-18 x 44 Airmax scope. I'd be quite happy with a 3-9 x 40 scope though, I just happened to have the Airmax already.
