Rimfireboy
Bought and fitted a new additional cabinet, phoned firearms today. Somebody has to come and check it before I can use it. Anybody know how long that's going to take in notts? Hope it's not going to be like waiting for a certificate renewal. I know they're busy. Rimfireboy
Rifles and shotguns. They told me before that I needed to inform them if I moved my cabinet. That's why I phoned them about the new one.

Kes
I was sure it was OUR responsibility to keep guns according to the regulations - I had an inspection when I first had an SGC and on renewals. I certainly wont be asking the police to check its safe for the purpose -thats my responsibility - they are welcome to check it on the next renewal. Nothing to say they should inspect a new one. a bigger one. a smaller one or a striped one afaiac.
Dekers
Oh Dear, this is simply another fireams dept flexing muscles they don't have.
steve_b_wales
After installing my first gun cabinet, I added another two, one just before my licences were due for renewal, and the other one, about a year later. No problem from my FEO, and he said that as long as the cabinet/s were 'police approved' and I fitted them in accordance to the rules, there was no need to inform them in advance,or after they had been fitted. RED BEARD
think its to make sure its fitted soundly enough, notts arn't bad with things like that.its just the paperwork side that lets them down.
Paul T
If you've installed it in accordance with the guidelines, use it . Firearms Dept needs to check you have suitable storage before granting a cert and that's it. It is up to you to keep them secure after that. You've done more than enough by telling them you've installed a new one and that's as far as I would go with them. It is not an offence to keep your guns secure, so why would you need their permission to use it? Just get on with filling it up I'll echo Deker's comment on 'flexing muscles'
bugman
I moved mine and then a few months later applied to have FAC on top of my current SGC. Didn't even bat an eye lid the cabinet had moved from where it was, just checked there was enough room for my increasing gun collection, separate locking for ammo and that it was well attached. Why did you even bother phoning them? All this does is create work which adds to their backlog and, inevitably, fees in the future. J. Nothing to say they should inspect a new one. a bigger one. a smaller one or a striped one afaiac. Entirely corect, Sir. When I started out I had 2 cabinets, both rifle cabinets. One to store guns and another to store ammo. I later added another one the same as I increased the number of guns and felt no reason to tell them. A few years ago I added another dedicated ammo cabinet with shelves just for the ammo and M/L pistols. Again, it never even crossed my mind to tell them, why would I? Last time a I had a renewal the lady who came out said she'd note on my file that I have storage for 20 guns, which I do. However, if, for instance, I get to the point where I find that I can only store 17 because I have a load of large scoped rifles or something, then I'm not going to be stupid enough to leave a few lying about the place. I'll get another cabinet. Actually, I'd probably go down the route of converting the room I use as a gun room to a secure room in its own right and do away with the steel cabinets. J. J. Dekers
Not what they told me. As I said above, your region are flexing muscles they don't have! I know it can be difficult for some to question their FEO/Region but ask them WHY, and which bit of the Firearms Acts demands this? Make it easier, frame the conversation in a way that you have been asking on forums and tell them you just want the information to throw in our faces and prove we are wrong, they can't get upset about that can they, except when they cannot answer you........ I know their response already..."its our policy"!! :hmm:

Frenchieboy
Like many others I installed another rifle cabinet and as a courtesy I phoned and let my Firearms Office (Lancashire) know. All they said was "As long as it is fitted properly and securely and meets the required build standards go ahead and use it, your new FEO MIGHT like to visit you at some time just to have a look". AS it was the new FEO and he came to visit me some 2 months later purely as a "courtesy call" and what a descent bloke he seems to be. He chatted for about 5 minutes and then just took one quick look and without even opening it said it was fine! Why can't all Firearms Offices and FEOs be like that instead of trying to create all sorts on silly and unreasonable red tape and extra work for themselves? kyska
As for how long it may take, if they 'insist', I moved to Notts in June, they arrived last week to check my cabinet was in order.....
al4x
The main issue you have is they will get the hump having given you that advice, personally I wouldn't have called because they don't need to know its my responsibility. The other things to remember is your FEO won't remember your safe layout they visit houses daily once every 5 years, mine never said a word in the last place when every time he visited it was somewhere else. Since then I've moved twice and they haven't been out to look its where they are wasting public money and increasing their workload unnecessarily. A simple phone call to ask where it is whether it is on an external brick wall and what fixings are used is more than enough information. Salopian
First, I have to say that I am not a Lawyer, so my advice is worth what you pay for it. The whole point of having a cabinet is for security purposes. The various firearms departments are interpreting the law to suit themselves. That is not their job or their purpose. Fit your cabinet properly in a secure environment and use it for its intended purpose. As a courtesy inform them that you have improved your security arrangements. It is then up to them if they want to arrange a security visit at YOUR convenience. Any problems or issues it may be in your interests to call Mike Eveleigh at BASC Firearms department. 01244573000. cleaner4hire
I moved house a couple of years ago and police regions. Nobody wanted to come and check if I was capable of refitting the cabinet... after all If you can do it correclty once it cant be that difficult to do it again.
