davehiscockplumb
Just reading issue 1, volume 15 of shooting sports, page 12. Top of the page it says "with legal requirements for sub 12 ft/lb air rifles to be secured" Have I missed something here? I thought Scotland may be brining this in? Am I still legal storing my rifles without a safe ?
bullet1747
Think they have to be secure now
sitsinhedges
They have to be stored so that minors can't easily access them now, a lot of new guns come with a padlock and a couple of steel eyes to be affixed to the wall or suchlike. If no minors live in or visit your house then nothing has to be done.
secretagentmole
Wrong, apparently if a minor breaks into your home, nicks your air rifle, you will get arrested! You have failed to prevent the minor from getting their hands on your gun! Another stupid flaming interpretation of the law, but that is what they will charge you with, failure to prevent your gun falling into the hands of a minor! Joe99
BASC website says: From February 2011, the Crime and Security Act 2010 makes it an offence for a person in possession of an air gun to fail to take “reasonable precautions” to prevent someone under the age of 18 from gaining unauthorised access to it. davehiscockplumb
Thanks for that. I store my rifles in my under stairs cupboard which has a door, not lockable tho. With my sofa in front of it, and the rifles in there cases. Will look into a safe and some trigger locks. Thanks all

Wrong, if your house is locked you have taken reasonable precautions to limit access to minors. You don't have to turn your home into Fort Knox to stay within the Law. Would be keen to see where that interpretation is and couldn't you come up with something more official sounding than that for the charge? -Mongrel-
If kids have access, lock it in a cupboard or chain/padlock it to a wall or similar, simples. Mine live in the gun cabinet anyway, peace of mind really. The locked door principle works in theory, but what about if you happen to leave a window open? Forget to lock the back door? At what point does it fall over as a principle? Not a concern for me, kids in my house so everything is locked up tight including shotgun carts. robbiep
From what I have been told, you need to take 'reasonable precautions to prevent unauthorised access'. I think a locked private property would be classed as reasonable. Please note that in a gunshop, shotguns and rifles are always secured, whereas air rifles are not. HDAV
Lock on cupboard door would be enough not sure if trigger locks count. as prevent firing not "access" http://www.amazon.co...ASIN=B0083H4APS I think a locked private property would be classed as reasonable. Please note that in a gunshop, shotguns and rifles are always secured, whereas air rifles are not. not in the ones i go to they arent you can just lift them off the rack and have a look at them.............(once buzzed through the security door into the shop however that my be as access to the whole shop is limited and you have to be buzzed in and out) Edited December 30, 2012 by HDAV

Clubshot
I have a large number of Youngsters and Parents @ my Club We strongly recommend that Air Guns are locked Away Been a Requirement for a couple of years Like much UK Legislation - Majority of shooters are not aware - Reason AMTA - UK Trade Body - gives away Free locking Cables to secure Air Gun's BOB/R
robbiep
We strongly recommend that Air Guns are locked Away ... Been a Requirement for a couple of years So, according to you, is it a recommendation, or a requirement ? If no under 18s are in your house, there is nothing in UK law that requires you to lock away an air rifle. Ensure it is stored out of sight of visitors, passers by, and you are complying. The police can recommend, but they cannot take any enforcement action at all. You have taken 'reasonable precautions' to prevent access to persons under the age of 18.
