dadrew
As a newbie to the whole shooting thing, whats the best way to dispatch a winged pigeon? I've been knocking them on the head with a priest but I either hit them in the wrong place and it dosent kill them or I hit them to hard. I obviousley want to kill them with the gun, bit somethines I miss! Any advise please?
Cosd
There are many threads on this subject if you do a search on "dispatch" Using a priest is a popular method, I personally prefer to hold the bird by the head and a quick flick of the wrist to spin the bird and it dispatches in a second or two. Like any method though, it does take some practice to get it spot on, so stick with it if you can and move onto more involved techniques once you have mastered that one would be my advice. NickB65
Do not do what I did when I first started and pull the head off...... the keeper was not amused. I use a priest and normally I dispatch in one blow but some use the "head spin" which is just as effective. Practise and you'll get there.
fenboy
I hold the bird in the left hand , and give its head a quick turn between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand , very quick and effective and no separated heads !. I dont like priests for pigeon as you tend to get blood splatter from head to toe .
Beretta06
As my stupid post of the week, I would like to say......... Aren't all pigeons winged?? That's how they fly :-) Sorry, I will get my coat :-(
motty
By far the quickest and easiest method is wringing the birds neck. With a bit of practise, from picking the bird up to dead bird takes just 2 seconds. If while getting used to it, you end up with a decapitated bird or two, it doesn't really matter. Blackbart
pick the bird by the head between your fingers and push your thumb on the top of their skull and it will cave in ! with a bit of practice you will do it as you pick them up and there is no other quicker way unless you shoot them correctly the first time
sitsinhedges
Thumb pressing hard between the wings to break the spine is quick and clean.
contrysports
Why not get some cheap cartridges to shoot the bird again with that way is probably best to do if your not confident with breaking their neck

timmytree
No cheap cartridges, no knives, no priests. You owe it to any bird to make it as quick and clean as possible and that is with your bare hands. Hold the bird by the head and give a quick twizzle and you'll feel the neck break. If you're not happy with that then just pull the head off, it may not be pretty but death rarely is. Just make it as quick as possible.
shootnfish
I usually bite the neck or i hold both legs in my left hand bird upside down breast against my leg head in my right hand beak upwards then pull down this way you feel the neck go and you don't pull their head off very quick and easy use this method for ducks pheasants, rabbits no problems.
