Davyo
My son(14yrs)had his interview yesterday for FAC/SGC, a couple of the questions asked apart from the usual safty questions was,'Can you give me the 7 components that make up as shot gun cartridge'.Astonishingly Josh knew the answer.,also FEO threw in the one about whats the procedure following a shotgun missfire which Josh also knew. All other questions where fine & hope fully licence will be granted. steve_b_wales
The above questions are, I believe, not legal, and it was probably something the FEO decided to ask. Anyway, good on your son for getting them right, and I hope he gets his licences soon.
CharlieT
I wouldn't be able to answer that question and I've had a shotgun for nearly 60 years !!
al4x
I wouldn't be able to answer that question and I've had a shotgun for nearly 60 years !! I don't think my FEO would have a clue either

I can't think of the 7th and I can't be bothered to google it either. Crimp maybe? Edited April 24, 2013 by Bleeh
neil3728
This had me as well, a quick google and the only thing i could find was a mention of some wads been made up of 3 different parts.
sitsinhedges
The shell could be tube, brass and base wad, otherwise he's talking ********. Maybe he should join the forum he'd fit right in.
CharlieT
7? Shot, case,wad,powder,primer.....what am I missing, shot card? And..... That's as far as I got before I decided I was obviously unfit to hold a SGC.
HDAV
That's as far as I got before I decided I was obviously unfit to hold a SGC. I honestly don't the relevance to being a suitable holder of an SGC........perhaps important to a reloader, if you take the case as 2 components that's still 6 overshot card not on factory loads on RTO and paper cases? Davyo
Case, brass, primer, crimp, shot, but modern wads are made up of three parts, the powder wad,the cushion, and the shot cup,the wad can come as three seperate parts or be one piece

wymberley
That FEO could be dangerous! Bet he's been reading Burrard - a little knowledge and all that. The over powder and under shot cards (assuming crimp closure) plus the five we've already got would make sense.
sitsinhedges
Don't forget the Weeto used to make up a low shot column
wymberley
As no one has yet done so, could I ask Davyo (or Josh) to put us out of our misery by providing the answer, please?
CharlieT
How about this.................http://homestudy.ihea.com/ammo/12shell.htm Which says it's 5 parts;- Primer Brass Head Powder Wad Shot Case Which, incidentally, are the only parts I used years ago when I used to reload. If we break down the case into component parts, we could add in the base wad and we're then up to the 7 for plastic wadded versions. Would like to know what the lad (to his credit) said. Ok I'll hold my hands up, I'm struggling with 7 parts, but I'm even more confused now, how does that make 5? 1 Primer 2 Brass Head 3 Powder 4 Wad 5 Shot 6 Case

Dekers
Davyo, can you get your boy to enlighten me, it seems that this has stumped me and the rest of PW at the moment!
The Essex Hunter
Would you say the primer has 2 component parts? The case and the explosive materials which sits in the primer… So the off with the fairies FEO might count that….. TEH

Redgum
What a load of rubbish, if the question isnt fictional then the FEO is off his rocker, why not ask how the barrel is made, what pressure will the gas in the chamber reach, whats the velocity of the shot leaving the barrel, how far will the shot go, how far will a .22lr bullet go against a 10mph wind, how loud is a shotgun in decibels etc etc etc etc etc. Such nonsense.
