Lawnmowers

Having considered the feedback from the ride on lawnmower thread I have binned it off and I am looking for a walk behind.

I am looking for a decent quality one - Honda / Hayter or similar.

Does anyone on PW deal in new or secondhand mowers - or know someone?

Cheers

Regards quality, SWMBO is a gardener, and over the years has bought, used and broken any number of mowers, from most of the brands

The most recent one, which is now about 4 years old, is a John Deere, and she reckons it's the best built one of the lot.

we bought three the year before last direct from Hayter in Bishops Stortford which had been returned to the factory with faults and then repaired. All have worked very well since and a substantial discount on new. Generally a decent one with roller gives the best result I can see if i can get the number if you are interested.

Of all the mowers I've used and worked on (and I went through loads in a past life at a grounds maintenance company) John Deere comes second place by a margin to Sabo for pedestrian mowers - the build quality of the sabos was way ahead of anything else we got our hands on and was the mower everyone grabbed first. Hayter - overpriced and trading on old reputation IMO - never was impressed with their pedestrian mowers TBH. Very old model mountfields (believe it or not) were up there build quality wise too - I've held onto one myself for years hoping to come across a replacement engine - they really were bomb proof but later models are utter rubbish. Honda mowers are also better in older models but newer ones were still reasonable. Rover - cheap ****, Flymos - interesting one this - B&S engine versions were surprisingly useable and robust even if it was just about all plastic  teucumseh engine versions - ****. There were loads of other useless mowers though they must have been too poor to remember what they even were now.

Well on the back this, I'm selling my Honda walk behind, and the Stiga sit on, if anyone is interested?

I'm going to go a for hayter and do all my lawns with a walk behind, more time outside and more time to sup beer doing so.

I've got one of these http://www.lawnflite.co.uk/product.php/15/203/lawnflite_pro_53cm_21__5_5hp_self_propelled_rotary_lawn_mower

It's very good and the deck is very solid. Father in law has a honda branded one with the same deck that must be at least 20 years old and its still going strong. I did a lot of shopping around before buying and most of the independent places said cheaper mowers including Hayter and Mountfield are **** and expect them to last for 5 years before the deck rusts out. Mine is 4 years old and good as new. It gets 2 hours use a week May to September.

Dont Hayter use Briggs & Stratton engines?-if so get a Honda :good:

If you get a Briggs & Stratton based machine make sure it's a Pre 2012 one, before they moved their operation out to china. Even before that I'm lead to believe that they had two operations. One making engines for the professional market and one for the mountfield type market. I bought a second hand Hyter 3 yrs ago and must have been 5 yrs old at least when I bought it. My neighbour spent much more on a shiny thing from b&q at the same time. He has to borrow mine now as his pees oil and takes a week and fresh chicken blood to start. all mine needs is a squirt of wd40 at the start of each year, and I keep it outside under a tarp.

Bottom line. Get a good quality engine on a decent platform and don't be suckered in by the new feature bow larks

Is that really true?

Not that I've been looking but the Hayter Harrier won best in class on lawnmowers world .com

I'll do some more looking, maybe upgrade my Honda.

I bit the bullet today and bought a previously enjoyed Hayter Harrier 48 VS.

I am sitting here looking out over my perfectly striped lawn.

Thanks all.

p.s. Sorry Kyska, Mrs ME was on my case to get it sorted, thanks anyway. :good:

Just to throw a different point of view into the pot. We just bought a cheapish petrol mower from Homebase with the idea that we would simply replace it once it gets troublesome because the "good" lawnmower we had before cost more than a car to have it serviced. So far its on its third year with no problems. I might change the oil if I get the urge.

Our lawn is part of the old farmers meadow that was here before the house was built so its not really bowling green standard, just need to keep it down.

Similar to above, last year I bought an elderly Hayter mower just to see if a petrol mower would be better than an electric for my lawns, the idea was that if it was any good I'd replace it with a new one.

Well, it's so good and reliable that I won't be replacing it any time soon!
