oscarsdad
Is that a silly idea? I am meaning when decoying to quickly dispatch wounded birds at close range (not shooting them from a distance!)
pegasus bridge
I personally would just use a priest, less faffing around, easy to get a clean kill.

fenboy
I prefer the priest to necking them, I pull their heads off to frequently! Then learn to neck them properly priests do the job but i have found that you end up with blood everywhere , not a good look when you pop in the garage on the way home
pegasus bridge
That's what I do now...just looking for an excuse to buy a new toy lol![/quote ] Well in that case, yes I would definitley get one! I usually end up pulling the heads off when necking them too.
Scully
I may be wrong, but I thought if the air pistol is incapable of creating 12 ft lbs it should not be used for humane despatch of birds etc. As I say,I could very well be wrong, but there's something niggling the back of my head about this, but I can't be bothered to google it! oscarsdad
I won't bother with dispatch but may buy a toy for the garden instead! Any recommendations...the CO2 blowback ones look good fun for plinking (although a bit too close to airsoft and I don't want o have to move back in with my parents and get rid of my fiancé!) Not meaning to be grumpy about it oscarsdad but just neck the wounded pigeons or as said use a priest on them & as quick as possible , there is no point wasting time & making the bird suffer any longer by all the fiddling about trying to get an air pistol out of your pocket or game bag & worse still finding it dose not really have enough power for the job . Just get it over with as quick & as humanly possible , its the best you could do . ATB Pole Star ps if you want one for just plinking then just go ahead & get one for that

oscarsdad
Er I think we are supposed despatch them as quickly as possible ? or thats what I was told a young lad . You have misunderstood or I wasn't clear...I have no intention of messing with a pistol for dispatch after the advice on here, I will carry on using a priest. Sha Bu Le
With a pistol I'm fairly rubbish so any that need a follow up will be necked.
Vince Green
Perfect excuse to get a .22RF pistol for despatch

If it was at 12 ft pounds then its a s1 as the limit for air pistols is 6ft pounds!!!!!! Overkill perhaps?
oscarsdad
Well I went to the shop to buy a toy for the back garden for plinking...god they are expensive toys! Started badly because the bloke said did I want an airsoft one to which I said definitely not, then he said "oh, so you have real guns don't you and think those of us doing airsoft are weirdos with toys?", "we'll, yes I do actually!" I said. He insisted they were "powerful hanguns" lol! I am sure they are good fun but this bloke took it all far too seriously! So I didn't buy anything and left lol! I will spend the money on some cartridges instead haha!
Lord Geordie
I bought a westlake break barrel pistol a few year back and it pushes 5.1 on a good day. 4.8 on others. When you see what the pellet will go through at close range you realise that it would be MORE than capable of dispatching a pigeon at PB. Mine is used for garden fun! I use reactive targets and have a good laugh with my Son. He is quite a shot to be fair! I took him to a game fair a few year back and.met up with a few lads off here, we went to the air rifle range and Chris scored 10 for 10 bulls eyes. The guy on the stall said! "bet you can't do that again" Chris paid his money and did it again. He was about 10 at the time! He wouldn't take his top shot badge off lol. Pistols "depending on output" can be more than enough for dispatch.
searley
I got a hw75 pistol for shooting rats, and i did once or twice use it to dispatch a rabbit, i can say that at close range there is more than enough power for the pellet to pass right through the head, and it does quickly dispatch them.. But i quickly got over my dislike of dispatching by hand, if needed, which nowadays is rare as better shot placement means they are dead outright For me something was telling me its not right to break the animals neck, but now i see it as the fastest and most humane way. So yes it is possible, but its just extra messing around, more cost, and more risk
