Crow Bashing with Eccles.

Yesterday, Mark (the poacher) and myself, travelled up to see our mate Terry (eccles) to do a spot of Corvid, Rabbit & Fox shooting. We had planned this day a few weeks ago, and intended to meet Terry at first light. But the bad weather and heavy rain put paid to an early start. So instead, we left my home at 11.30 am and I drove the 90 miles to meet Terry. We got to the field where Terry had chosen at around 1.30pm, and as we drove down the lane by the side of the field,we could see 100's of Carrion Crows and Jackdaws on the ground. A few of them flew off, but the majority of them stayed put.

Terry suggested that Mark and I set our hide on a field behind him, as he knew that this was a flight path for the birds. He set up just by the side of the field. Mark and set up and got ready for some action. We could hear Terry firing his shotgun, and then one Crow came close enough for me to shoot. It was still raining, but not as bad as when we left home. After about 45 minutes, nothing came our way, and Terry was still firing quite regulary. We packed up and Terry said to go to the other end of the field and set up there. We did that, and straight away, Crows and Jackdaw's came into our decoys and were duly shot.

The weather got brighter, and Mark and I shot quite a few birds, and missed a few as well. Later, we moved our hide down near to where Terry was set up, and again, between the three of us, we shot some more.

By the time we had decided to pack up, we picked up 73 Crow's/Jackdaws, plus there was one still out in the field, that we used as a decoy. Mark and I knew that we dropped a further 5 birds, and Terry said that at least 7 of his landed in the other field, but we could'nt get in there owing to the crops that were growing.

So, we reckoned that at least 86 birds fell to our guns.

After packing our kit away, at about 8pm, Terry took us a short distance to another farm where the farmer said he saw 100's of rabbit's, and he was right. We walked around the field and could see many rabbits running about, and could see all the runs that they had made. We went into another field, and Terry, using his Daystate FAC shot quite a few rabbits, some at up to 80 yards +. Some excellent shooting was to be seen by Terry, as the light was fading fast, and we had to use a red filtered lamp to spot the rabbits. I shot one using my .22LR. Then we walked around a different field, and by now it was dark. Mark spotted a young fox cub, and called it in close, but it decided to go through the bushes into another field. Then we spotted another cub, only a bit bigger. Mark called it in again, and I shot it. We also spotted a few more fox cubs, but we did'nt have a safe shot at any of them. Heading back to our vehicles, Terry shot a couple more rabbits, making the total to 10.

We left Terry, after saying our thanks and goodbye's. and headed back home. We left Terry at around 11.30pm and arrived at my house 2 hours later.

Mark and I thoroughly enjoyed our day out with Terry, and also his good company and humour, and the fact that all our gear got soaked, made no difference at all. We hope to join Terry again soon for another crack at the Crows/Rabbits.

Our thanks to Terry for a brilliant day.

The photo's show : (1)some of Terry's decoys from Paul Hart, (2 & 3) the view from our hide. (4) our bag of 73 (picked up) Corvid's, (6) Terry and Mark, and (7) Myself and Terry.

It was a pleasure to have you both up, :good: nice to have good company for a change to shooting on my tod. :sad1:

If we could have started at 5 ish i'm sure we would have had a great bag. My Nephew said on passing them fields on the way to work this morning it was black hundreds.

So i will be out first thing Thursday morning for another bash at them..He will be out with me shooting Mon or Tue next week on next farm up to this 1.

The plan i had for Steve and Mark was early morning on the crows till 1ish then back to around my home. Then i could have had my afternoon kip  and sent them off to shoot what ever they wanted on my other farms for a few hours, no prob with boundaries there ain't any. Then gone out after rabbits and foxes, but weather spoilt that. :sad1:

Phil the farmer where we shot yesterday said he was going to tell his friends in the area that i can get teams together to do their control for them. Wifes cousins farm is next door that is where we shot rabbits and fox.

Thanks again lads enjoyed your company. :good::good::good:
