The old car is dieing, so I need to get a new one very soon.

I've started to look at 4x4 and need some advice, a bit of info I do a 34 mile round trip each day for work then to a farm and back the occasional trip to town/ day out. I want a good all rounder good for the family but good for shooting. I've looked at the freelander 2.2 2007 but I also like the navara.

Any help would be great.

Our navara at work only gets mid 20s and about 30mpg when driving like miss daisey.

The navara is very comfortable in the front but the back seat area is not very big, its the same for most of the pick ups as you have got the big (normally empty) load space. To be honest unless you need all that load space then dont bother with a pick up as you compromise on interior space, ride comfort and mpg for the sake of carrying around an empty tub on the back.

I have not driven the new freelander but the reports seem all very positive and from what you have put you will be doing I think this would be a lot more suited for your needs.

I'd throw an Xtrail into the mix with those requirements. Pickups come into their own if you do a lot of lamping or stalking or game shooting and have a dog or two. I love mine to bits but it does spend a couple of nights a week lamping, goes stalking as often as I can and during the game season tends to hold anything up to 6 or 7 dogs and occasionally beaters in the back as well. Its also comfortable enough to use daily and on any shooting forrays further afield that we do. MPG is lower than you require though but with the use I give mine 28-30 seems reasonable

It all depends on your budget...

The Freelander looks good, but is the new model as unreliable as the old ones....? As with most Land Rovers, the designs are good, but they always appear near the top in the unreliability ratings.

X Trail is very good, although you have to be aware of the fairly low ground clearance on the back box.

Subaru Forester is brilliant (had two), but there is a dearth of dealers nowadays. New diesel engine is far, far better than the petrol on mpg.

I have had a couple of Skoda Yeti's and they fit my requirements. The diesel is very economic and smooth. Back seats fold down in a jiffy to increase the boot space.

Looking at your reqs I'd go Subaru Forester, will do everything you need, everything that has been suggested above and will be much more reliable than anything suggested so far. You'll get 30mpg from the petrol so it'll be cheaper to run than anything suggested also.

why would it be cheaper to run than any of the pickups or 4x4's that do 30 plus mpg? I find a pickup pretty cost effective, commercial rate of road tax, Insurance isn't bad and fuel isn't bad then being jap repairs don't tend to be needed often and even when they are parts aren't bad from milners

+1 for X Trail providing you're not going to be out and out mud plugging.

I've had 2 some time back but changed to a pick up as the need for all weather prompt fox control cropped up but this has now ceased, and also for other reasons, it's X trail again. It's an ideal roomy comfortable family vehicle. There's a lot of plastic were there needs to be so it's easy to keep clean after shooting ready for family use.

Most - 90% - of my shooting is ambush work following a recce. Front seats forward, bit of gash carpet to protect rear seat footwell/transmission tunnel (this can wear quickly if you stomp around on it) carpet, panoramic roof fully back, piece of felt backed carpet (stitched edge if your local carpet store can do this - sowing usually costs about £1 a foot) 90 to 100 cms deep, 105 at front - rear of sun roof - and 102 cms wide at the rear which holds it in place between the roof rails and protects your paintwork and away you go.

A few months ago I would have recomended a Freelander 2. I have one and love it, while its under warrenty.

The car is only 2 years old done 50k and has just had a new stearing box fitted and had to have the gearbox dropped to replace an oil seal.

I asked what the price would have been to do the job outside of the warrenty £2000 as a rough price. So the car is going back just before the warrenty expires.

I have had my Freelander 2 for two years now and its never gone wrong you only have to look at all the other motoring post's and there has been faults with just about any other car.

Sorry, but I think that you are incorrect.

Year after year the products from Land Rover have been high on the poor reliability stakes in all the ratings that I have seen. This is in direct contrast to motors from Japan and Germany etc

If you have a good one then count your blessings, as on average they break down with unfailing reliability. I do so wish that they didn't, as otherwise I for one would have bought one.

Land rovers die.. This is a fact! Iv had mg/rovers/range rovers/ freelander, first time you do anything silly it will break. It's Sod's law.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to get my ranger over back on the road. (And I will, before Xmas!) but, there so bloody unreliable it's unreal!

For 10k, you could get a nice hilix if mpg isn't an issue. If it is, your not going to get a proper trail buster. But, for 10k your not taking it green laning let's be honest. In that respect, I'd say, something like a xtrail, q3 Quattro (next doors got a brand new one and he goes to remote mountain biking destinations in it fine) or, sounds a bit mad, but a kuger or a mid size SUV (there's bloody millions of them that are near enough the same)

I have an '07 Freelander 2, now done 121,000 miles.....I have owned it since it had approx 20k on it. Apart from dif' bearings at 70k (long story/should of been warranty job) and it's first clutch at 90k all I have put on it is pads, discs, tyres. Just had MOT done and failed on two suspension arm ball joints which cost £36 pair and a few hours to fit. Averages 34-36mpg but will easily do mid 40's on a run, Goodyear Wrangler's last approx 40,000 miles. Looking to get new shocks soon though as ride quality getting harsh.

All in all it's been a pleasure to own.......
