so most know the story of my reptured disc etc over the last 6 months and now I'm booked in for an operation in 3 weeks. for about 7-8 weeks now iv been taking EVERY 4 hours

2 x tramadol

2x diazepam

2x paracetamol

2x ibrupeofin

also taking when waking up in the nigh in pain.

.....and obviously at the start of this I spent 7 days in hospital on morphine and all the other ****. I simply couldn't go to work or shoot or sleep without taking these drugs to ease the pain. 4 days ago I thought "sod it, I feel ok'ish and don't like how long I have been taking these painkillers"

my god what a mistaka-to-maker!!!!! I have spent 4 days and nights, in cold sweats, snapping, itchy, clicking and clucking, when I sleep I have wierd dreams and wake dripping with sweat and cold, iv been shouting in my sleep and have gone of food all togeather, Rang my doctor to explain that I feel like a character from train spotting and his reply was along the lines of " oh mr knight I told you to come of them slowly as they have the same withdrawal symptom as opium based products and both tramadol and diazepam are HIGHLY addictive! "" I don't remember the pleb saying any of that when he put me on them! he's told me to carry on taking them but half doses slowly, sod that I'm 4 days in now and hope to start feeling better any day now. I can't imagine what it's like to get hooked on somthing like meth or heroin if I'm honest. I'm simply sharing this story for all the other back pain sufferers on this forum as a heads up. now iv googled it it seems I have shared this issue with half the country who have been prescribed these drugs haha.

Been there - could write a book about Morphine, Tramadol etc. I got off them after my third visit to hospital - purely because of what Tramadol had caused.

I take no pain killers, but face the rest of my life feeling like someone is stabbing me in the back and ribs. Never, ever goes away. I hope you end up in a better state.

iv never been through anything like it. I would rather the laying on the floor not at work then being hooked on drugs like that. they need to explain ALOT more before handing them out willy nilly. I'm not a week person what so ever but it's been a hard 4-5 days and nights. Builds character though ;)

Great fun innit?

Last time I came off my painkillers I was at the side of a swimming pool in Turkey - 38 deg and I was wearing a tee shirt, jumper and wrapped in a beach towel for extra warmth :sad1:. It took me a couple of days.

Stick with it mate - if you can manage without painkillers all well and good  . I just find the pain too disruptive - can't sleep, can't concentrate on anything and I'm permanently snappy. Living with a constant red mist and not being fully aware of your surroundings isn't good  . I want to shoot and enjoy life, and to do that I need to get pain under control - it's a no brainer for me.

Good luck :good:

How awful. I feel for you.

Tramadol is superb for what it is, but unfortunately some people have issues with it.

Have you tried any other 'complementary' treatments for pain relief? BMJ studies have shown that psychotherapy using distraction techniques have worked very well with people with chronic pain, TENS, acupuncture are also other non drug treatments, or have you discussed the non painkiller pain killers similar to the anti-epileptics or anti-depressants?

You shouldn't have to live in a state of pain, although pain is a very simple thing we all understand, its surprising how very personal pain can be, ask for a referral to a neurologist or do it privately.

kyska - thanks for the thoughts.

I had sessions with the aptly named "Pain Nurse", but they only prescribe drugs.

Distraction actually works for me. When I am busy or in company, I tend to push the pain to one side. Once I stop, it returns - relentless.

You're welcome, I really think you could do with a referral, there are lots of other ways of dealing with pain, without being rude, and not getting you all wrong, I imagine you can afford to see a specialist, even if it's for pain management solely and no further 'invasive' treatments.

Distraction techniques only really work with 'pulsing' or transient pain, you obviously don't fall into this clinical criteria.

Go see someone, pain can have such an impact on your quality of life, even when you 'get used to it', its not a good state to be in.

What drugs did they suggest? Some people, learned or not, get anxious about drugs from initial treatment.

I've only just read the initial post, the 'pleb' probably saved you a whole lot of pain, and you decide after medical advice to do the opposite anyway?

Excellent.

the "pleb" said I had a pulled muscle and sent me home on drugs lol turns out I couldn't walk and had a ruptured disc and some other problems and needed an operation after 6 months of not driving, having bills bounce I spent 6 weeks on the floor on initial thread I put a picture up of me in an ambulance as I couldn't walk to the toilet etc and turns out "pulled muscle" was slightly rong. thanks for ur input any way. good advice to gorden as his isn't being sorted but physio won't fix mine hence the reason for operation and long stays in hospital.

Excellent!

Diazepam is an anti anxiety drug often prescribed as a muscle relaxant and is not an opiate, it is a benzodiazepine and unlike opiates cessation without a gradual tail off can cause seizures and even death ! You can dump the rest overnight but you must please be careful with any members of the benzo family when stopping them

No, I don't obviously, I just think its a bit disrespectful after getting prescribed care you feel free to abuse him/her.

How would have you got on without the 'plebs' help?

Take this advice with a pinch of internet salt, let us forget the effects of opiate withdrawal, which is exactly has been discussed IE Tramadol.

been in pain ( right side ribs and back ) for around 7 years now on tramadol , cocodamol , naproxin , also attended the pain clinics ,

unfortunatley the docs cant see anything obviously wrong  . so the suffering continues .

like Gordon said though , keeping my mind busy does kind of help , although its pretty hard to block out

good luck with your op , you,ll probably need those pain killers during your rehab

The most pain that I have ever been in was when I came round from having a similar op to the one Reece is having. Thank the all seeing omnipotent being for morphine.

I was on Tramadol for a good while after having my tonsils out last year, VERY painful as an adult... oh and an artery ruptured 2 days after surgery and I nearly bled to death... anyway... **** happens huh!

I dont remember having any issues after coming off the pain meds.. I must be one of the few lucky ones!

I've had problems coming off anti anxiety drugs in the past and taking less over time was the only way I could do it.

Hope you start feeling right soon!
