security on one of those, good luck. the only thing that surprises me is why anyone would want to nick one

seriously tho, the best bet would be to rig up some sort of switch on the feed to the pump and label it as a fog light switch, failing that, stick the mrs in the back or take the steering wheel off

I would look at at some kind of external anchorage rather than internal security!

Something to secure the vehicle in situ and avoid it being moved.

Small stuff like steering devices and pedal box covers are useless if they bring a hiab or low loader.

Some kind of ground anchor system would be my choice. Pain in the backside to lock and unlock I know, but in My view it would be the only decent chance you have. Being UNDER the vehicle would limit work space for any thief, and if the system was set to lock over the axle front and rear, and had side skirts, it would offer protection from CAT theft too.

Just a thought! Build.a better mouse trap n all that! :D

Nothing is completely secure if they come with one of those lorries with that they just pick it up I think my idea have a quick release steering wheel and you take the steering wheel with you it makes the thing undrivable when you get back just push the wheel back on and off you go.

The best thing is to lock it in the garage but then most people seem to prefer filling the garage with junk that should be in a garden shed and they leave there car/truck in the drive where it is simple to snatch it away or vandalise.

Ardcase pedal locks are good but a bit of a pain to use regularly. The x engineering one secures to the floor and folds back when driving i think so that could be good. Ive read that they can be annoying and in the way though.... Personally I think they look the best despite this.

Diskloc steering locks are supposed to be the best.

Tracking devices are popular too.

Get on the Landyzone forum and do a search on there as there is lots of info on this.

Good luck.

Having had my last Defender stolen, I am now paranoid, so here's what I do with my new Defender Td5: it has an alarm/immobiliser, steering lock, it is parked off road with the wheels in full lock, and I have a special trick I do under the bonnet (I won't reveal but would be happy to share on a pm with anyone).......oh, and I am having a tracker fitted this week.

I use the winch cable locked to floor plate and also have a wheel lock and thick heavy chain around peddles and padlocked up.
The winch bolts are welded too, to stop some one from removing it or motor from floor plate post.
Pm sent to Mightymariner.

  • 4 weeks later...

A PROPER heavy duty ground anchor / something immovable / telegraph pole / street light. A proper heavy duty chain and padlock combo such as

http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/Almax-Immobiliser-Series-IV/c-1-70/

Locked to an immovable bit of the vehicle. Bloke near me locks his Land Rover to the telegraph pole outside his house. :good:

Problem with defenders is they are way to easy to get going, the standard security is pants, immobilisers are not worth fitting without also fitting a extra fuel solenoid. Stardard 2/300 tdi takes 30seconds to get going once the bonnet is open, bonnet cable is easy to access from underneath and cab lock / steering lock are pants

Make it less attractive than any other vehicle. My defender is the cheapest of all three vehicles we own but it's the one that shows in the garage. On a few occasions I have left it out it gets blocked in with two other cars.

A hidden kill switch is also a good idea.

I find it hard to understand why it is so simple to steel them OK old ones without electronic fuel injection and immobalizers but newer ones why I defy anyone to steel my Jeep Cherokee without having the proper key for it.

Dont feel too smug.... all vehicles have shortcuts to bypass their security and not everyone in the trade are honest and keep secrets.

I used to be able to hot wire certain Honda bikes without any tools in under 10 seconds and drive off with all the electrics working and as a traffic cop. lots of us used to carry 'master keys' for some makes ( not as useful these days with immobilisers)

I used to have a friend who worked for the AA who went on specialist courses on how to bypass cars security, he really ****** one guy off by getting into his car and starting it in under 15 seconds without key and bypassing immobiliser.

All security buys you is time and inconvenience for the thief with the hope that he will go for an easier target.

Years ago I moaned to my insurance that i didnt get a garage discount on my motorbike insurance.... when I explained that it was parked in an army barracks with an armed guard right by it, they gave me the discount :-) .
